HELP needed front caliper brakes problem !!

   Hi there, went to change discs and pads today on my mk1 vts and whilst removing the 2 19mm caliper bolts attaching the front caliper to the car both bolts were on so tight that that the thread has totally stripped off and came out with the bolt, now the bolts just slide back in and have no thread to grip to so currently cant use car dont really want to replace hole front hub especially if all four corners turn out being as bad
   Has anyone else had this problem how did u get around it ??
   Would it be possible to re tap the threads and try get new bigger bolts ??
   Or would it be easier to try a helicoil insert if so what size as dnt understand the sizing ??

   Would be cheaper and easier to get some second hand struts

   why were you undoing those bolts. You only need to undo the two carrier bolts which are hidden behind the dust covers.
   
   But seeing as the work is done as Tom said, it would just be cheaper and easier to get some 2nd hand struts - Looking at £20-30 a side for a complete unit.

   he did undo the carrier bolts but it stripped the threads?

   the bolts that hole the caliper on are 19mm IIRC and the carrier bolts are only 10mm? - Both hex keys as well?? (At least mine are)
   
   Edit: I think re-reading that we've confused ourself over the carrier. I'm on about the carrier for the pads - leaving the piston half of the caliper on the strut. If its only the earlier thats gone then if you can get the entire caliper off then its only them that you need to replace. Hope that makes sense as i'm crazily tired.

   Done the same or rather someone else sheared a thread on the carrier to strut. I'd rather give a helicoil a go than strip this strut and its associated shock to put in the spare I do have, any idea what the helicoil spec is needed for this thread is it M9 1.25?
