Bent alternator belt bracket, bolt snapped

I had a very squeeky alternator, read up on it and believed it to be the alternator belt. Took mine off and had a look and the grooves are split etc, so went to get a new one, this one is wider and sits on the pullys better.

When i put the new one on as it was wider than the old one it needed to be tightend more than the old one. As i was tightening it up I noticed the bolt was starting to bend and before i knew it, it snapped

Looked at the bracket it screws on to and for some reason it is bent which caused the bolt to bend and snap.

So i'll have to go scrappy tomorrow to get another, are they all the same size ? 1.1's, 1.4's etc ?
And with a straight one on it will let me tighten the new belt to the right tension, is this correct ?

I don't believe that because the belt is wider than the old one you had to tighten it a lot more. If it slightly longer maybe. The bracket can be straight or bent, the most important thing to remember is that the alternator pulley should be in line with the crank pulley.
