16mpg is no fun

  1. #1
I've only just got my 106 GTI back on the road and it's doing my head in as i'm currently getting about 16mpg.

I'm just waiting for the predator ECU which should hopefully improve things, but i drive like a saint generally and sometimes give it some beans but generally drive as eco friendly as i can.

Any ideas to improve fuel consumption?

I assume you've done a fair bit changes to your engine? Tried resetting ECU?

Other than that only thing to advise is be light on the throttle, try stay in high gear and look ahead and avoid unneccessary braking.

The car is standard barring a blitz exhaust, tho i was always told it had kent cams, skimmed head etc... but it's still quicker than a standard GTI which is odd.

    Any ideas? lol

strip it always helps with less weight
  5. #5
I stripped the back seats out once, and was thinking of it again, but then i can only fit one person in with me so im not sure lol

Try a full service mate;plugs, fuel and oil filters renewed along with the engine oil itself. Sounds like a serious Fuel mix problem which is usually down to the lambda sensor being shot. would replace that first tbh, unplug battery and ecu for 30 mins and hopefully it will sort itself out. even with those mods 16 mpg is seriously low.
If all else fails just sell it and buy a 1.1

welcome to the low mpg club. the petrol pump is your best friend and your bank cards nightmare
  8. #8
16mpg... shizzle, even I'm getting way more than that. Either you're constantly ragging it around or theres something up.
  9. #9
I'm doing a jp4 head conversion soon and got a predator ECU coming.

Diagnostic showed lambda sensor is fine so will try a full service

    Andy
  10. #10
    that must be really annoying
  11. #11
have it serviced mate and c if that helps
  12. #12
Ok, i worked it out today and i put £20 in a couple of days ago when my fuel light came on and it came back on today after 96 miles.

So i'm working that out as 24 miles per gallon roughly. How does that sound Feels bad lol

    doesnt sound great
  14. #14
    Ideas?

What is needed for a full service? Oil change was done quite recently actually.

Typical cost of parts for a service?

    Andy
  15. #15
air filter (maybe £10-£20 - oem)
    oil filter (£10)
    oil (£40)
    fuel filter (£10)
    Antifreeze for coolant (£15)
  16. #16
Air filter i got an aftermarket one.

£40 for oil :o ? Where you buying from? Seems a lot lol 10/40w right?

What about spark plugs? Worth going fancy?

    http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-1146-sil...e-engines.aspx

get a bit of discount on there from here

could try new plugs, don't go fancy, go NGK

might just be your right foot though
  18. #18
does your car stink of petrol at all? what the sparks like? also think of coolant temp sensor that will royally do you mpg aswell if thats ropey
  19. #19
Make sure your exhaust isn't blowing sound like it may be part of the problem
  20. #20
is car getting warm --is temp gauge in correct postion?
something far wrong with it,you damaged the lambda probe ?
  21. #21
I went to a local motor shop and got sparks, oil, oil filter and Fuel filter for £36.

Once you've serviced it, run it about for a bit and give the oil a smell to make sure the fuel isn't mixing with the oil.

Also check tyre pressure, if tyre pressure is low that won't help your mpg.
  22. #22
does your petrol tank just like run to the floor
  23. #23
Garage done diagnostic and lambda etc... was fine, nothing showed up at all.

I have noticed that the gasket between the mani and cat isnt in properly so its blowing a bit, could this be the cause? As it's giving me an excuse to fit my decat now.

Car smells of oil, but always has, no smell of petrol.

How would i check the sparks?

Temps are fine by the way, water and oil both settle just around half way.

blowing gasket won't help, but wouldn't of thought it would kill your mpg that much.

You have to take coil pack off and take the sparks off and inspect them.

It's something daft like you petrol gauge? Have you filled it to the brim and seen how far you get?

Did you check your tyre pressure?
  25. #25
My petrol gauge don't work properly but it does show me the fuel light so i measured from when it came on, put £20 in and then drove it until it came on again.

Can't afford to fill it to brim at the moment.

Will check tyre pressure shortly though.

air leak before lambda probe will cause ecu to add fuel --thats your problem most probably --not much of a garage who didi the diagnostic check ifthey didn,t know that
  27. #27
Ok, time to fit decat tomorrow then, gives me an excuse to fit it now as my dad thinks i should keep the cat on

Think it will add much noise to my already (setting off car alarms and waking people up) blitz subaru 4" exhaust? lol

Well i found out my problem, i don't know what it is but i could see fuel coming from the pipe in question (like a heatwave effect)

Can anyone shed some light as to what this is, how to fix it and how much its going to cost me?

    I can see the problem.

    Your exhaust fell off...

Edit: Just joking but thats definitely the reason your getting shit mpg. Can't believe we ouldnt even fit your decat. What a load of crap eh?
  30. #30
Def think the decat is for a VTR/Quicksilver

Took that pic when the cat was off, hence the lowness of it lol

Are you running standard size wheels?

Bigger wheels may give you a larger rolling radius depending on tyres fitted. Therefore a lower speed showing on your speedo and a "lower than what it actually is" milage readout as well.

Also check tyre pressures, low pressures will knock a couple of mgp off at least.

    PMd you details

LOL to get that sort of mpg he would be looks at 90inch rims at least. Bigger wheels is not going to reduce it buy that much
  34. #34
Got 15's, it's def that valve thats broken as you can see the fuel waving out of it.

Ordered from Citroen, just got to figure out how to fit it?

I'm guessing i've got the drop the fuel tank?
