Overheating ..

   i had been driving for 10 miles this morning when temperature light came on.. engine then cut out.. i managed to re start car and moved onto a main road.. Black smoke coming from exhaust, and so much steam/smoke from under the bonnet, and the smell was awful..called the AA. the said its not the head gasket, the only thing they could think of after looking at the car for 2hrs was the water pump?..
   
   I have done over 110000 miles and the car is a 1.1i Yreg, the AA guy said it wasnt worth repairing and i should try and sell it... GUTTED!!! ive had since new..
   
   is the water pump a tricky or costly job... i have no idea... but what if it isnt that!!...
   
   ive just had new rear wheel cyclinders, new ignition and 4 new tyres, all in last 7weeks.. never had an issue before this.. is this the start of a long line of problems?.. perhaps the AA man was right!!

   i wouldnt trust the aa half of the time... is the heater hot or cold on the blower? and does the coolant bottle smell like exhaust fumes? if it does the head gasket has gone. if the heater is hot and the coolant does not smell of exhaust fumes then it probly is the water pump... hope this helps..
   
   by the way if you are wondering why i dont trust the AA it is because a friend of mine broke down and they said it was the head gasket and it was just a pipe come off.

   Im rubbish with cars so sorry for basic writing!!
   
   he did this test on the steam from the water/coolent..he had this liquid, he said if it went green/yellow then it was the head gasket.. it didnt change colour tho..

   when you have the heater on is it hot or cold?

   oh the last week or so it is only hot when im actually moving, then when im at traffic lights or something it goes cold....... something to do with when the ignition was changed, it was fine until then!!.. the screen wash squirter and windscreen wipers on setting one dont work either!!!!

   ok thats probly the water pump then. they dont cost much really you could probly do it yourself lol
