anyone else had this problem?

Yesterday I decided iwould remove the cooling for the manifold and block up the egr valve. I followed the pipe down to the pump and as I couldn't remove it i cut off the pipe. I started the car and it was running badly, making a sort of mechanical knocking sound from somewhere. I thought it might be the pump so In disconnected the electrics from it and I can still hear the noise. Does anyone have any ideas????
    Thanks in advance.

What is an egr Valve? I don't think I have one of those lol

Is it a good idea to block it up?

EDIT: I know what it is now lol and you won't gain anything from blocking it off, it just helps in cold starting. The knocking might be you have got something inside it? Where is the knocking coming from?

Only removed the piping for looks. The mk1 doesn't even have them and I am told they are worthless and alot of people remove them. I cant really tell where the noise is coming from to be honest.

Ahh, well have a listen, is it coming from the block? Rocker Cover?

Get a screw driver place the handle in your ear and the other end on the Engine, move about from the block ro rocker cover Etc... You'll hear where the noise is coming from

I think it is coming from the part with 16v plenum cover.

    The Rocker Cover lol

You have Hydrolic rockers on the VTS so you can't ajust them, however you may be able to take it off to see if anything's wrong. How bad is it? Is it just a slight tap or a loud heavy knock? Dose it go when the Engine warms up?

Maybe try connecting everything back up and see if it fixes it?

i am told its the inlet manifold

Hmm, might well be mate, I'm trying to picture the Engine of a VTS, I thought the 16V sticker was on the top. Never the less I can't imagen what can be making a knocking noise just because of what you've done. Does the Engine run lumpy also?

It has a tendency to run lumpy whenever i reset the ecu lol but after a day or so it goes back to normal. Its running well now but I can still hear the noise.

the bit that says 16V on it is the inlet manifold, can't think of anything there that would make a knocking noise

Ahh yes mandyslover70a is right, sorry about that.

And I really can't think of what can be making knocking noises in there... Maybe connect it back up and see if the noise goes? That way you know what is causeing the noise, and look for ways to avoid it if you still want to remove it?

Have you blocked off where the air is pumped into the side of the head?

    yes i blockedthat off.
