It's not a 'bad' idea; just depends on whether you can insure it.

    go for it, why not

A VTS as a first car is a fair jump if you've just passed your test. First of all as said above, insurance. Insuring a Corsa 1.4 Sport for example will easily cost you 2k+, and they are only insurance group 9. A VTS is Insurance group 14, so they'll be a sigificant difference.

In my opinion, your first car should be the cheapest thing you can your hands on. That way, it can be bumped and scraped and you don't car less. So long as you don't driving a basic car like a track car you should be ok.

Its like being a baby, you have to learn to crawl before you can walk.

Well its nt really a vts, iv got a vts engine and im thinking of putting it in to my 1.1 ax shell,
  8. #8
And you've just passed your test?
  9. #9
yeah, do you think its a bit much?
  10. #10
I would recommend waiting before taking on something like that, all it takes is one misjudged corner at stupid speeds and your history.

Get Corsa Sxi or something and lower it and exhaust it. Build your way up like most of us have.

I know sounds like the wise Father talk, but you really don't learn to drive until after you've passed your test.

ive got a 1.4 for my first car and thats cost me £2k insurance.

but its more than quick enough for what i need.

at the end of the day it doesnt matter how fast your car is becuase you've got to stick to the speed limit anyway.

Im 19 passed in sept 2008 and have 1 years NCB, no accidents, no points and to insure a VTS is around 4k+

no, you'll learn to respect the speed.
you have a 1.1 you'll rag it everywhere because its slow.
a mate (tweedie on here) has a vtr that was his first car, not so much as scratched it in 2 years.

As above a 1.4 Saxo is a good call, got the VT kit and is still fairly nippy, also it won't be anywhere near as bad as a VTS to insure
  16. #16
do it!!! i had one as a second car cost about a grand with admiral to insure after 6-8 months of passing my test , not really worth the extra money because i prefer the vtr , hope this helps
  17. #17
if you can afford the insurance do it
  18. #18

that is fucking crazy, ive decided against cars because of insurance quotes a quarter of that
  25. #25
allot of people won't recommend it, but there's no difference from anything else on the road if you drive right
  26. #26
If you want the speed of a vts, get another car with 120 odd break.

The seat ibizas diesels etc are easily 100 then a remap etc is 110+ and they are the same insurance group as a furio (5)

Basicly, as soon as you put in saxo on the insurance quote, alarms ring.

    And the stereotyping starts.

"Its a tin can where if you reverse into a bench its a fatal write off and the driver will have 20 boys in the back with music loud and modified etc etc"

Im going to be paying 2k for my vts after 1 years driving.

    Good times

    FLOL.

Personally, i think the £450 a pay to insure my vts is too much. F*ck paying 10 x that lol.

i was made to have a standard 1.1 for my first car and had to keep for a year.

have to repect the road and speed,

also as you are planning a vts engine in a ax! that worst than a standard vts to insure!

bet most insurance company will not even insure you with that!

i would keep it a 1,1 for a year or so and save the money!

You'll struggle to insure an AX VTS conversion at anywhere near a reasonable price. I can insure a VTS for £290 a year FC which is only £1 more expensive than I can insure a VTR. But as soon as I said I was insuring a VTS conversion people wanted £550 to insure what is basically the same car. I paid less than that to insure my TVR when I was 22! I managed to get it down to £390 with Adrian Flux by telling them that I drive a 2.5ltr V6 Mondeo as my daily driver and have a TVR as my weekend toy so I should be ok with a VTS conversion in my VTR

Just respect it mate, dont drive it like a nob and you will be ok. I always thought it was a waste of money and didnt really understand people buying a 1.1 etc and making it into a VTR/VTS, as in the long run it only costs more that actually buying a VTS, plus you have to declare these to your insurance which increases the premium again. Each to there own and that like.

But yes, if you respect it you will be ok. But they are nippy little things so if you do go for the VTS be careful and get used to it PROPERLY before giving it 'the bifters'
    :-)

Also wouldnt you go for the VTS? only IG 7, plus still got some grunt, especially for a 1st car.

saxguy- your a tool if you gonna pay over £4k to insure a saxo! its the principle of it! really want to give an insurance company that much money to insure a 10 year old hatchback? u must have something to prove to someone to be paying that much!

and yea an ax with a vts conversion for a first car is one of the most stupid ideas ive ever heard of! the insurance is going to be through the roof thats if u actually tell the insurance company, Ive been driving over two years and so many company's wouldn't even insure me on a standard vts until i was 21, they would laugh me off the phone if i told them about an engine conversion , i had a 1.3 fiesta for my first car £1500 to insure, then a 1.4 astra then i went for a 1.6 xr2i fiesta then my vtr then had the 16v conversion and like i said ive only just got the power of a 16v over two years after passing
... in other words just get a 1.4 furio will be so dangerous for you to have 120 bhp
  36. #36
Its all down to can you insure it? My first car was a clio williams look alike still a 2litre 16v cost me £3 a YEAR more than the car was worth. So I then after a year I sold up and went to a 1.2 punto insurance was still 2k for a year, so after one YEAR I was thinking 1k different between a 2litre and a 1.2 so I decided on a vts, if you passed your tested then your safe enough to be on the road so a vts is ok for a first car.. Just dont be stupid as your still learning..
