VTR Chugging

  1. #1
On Friday I bought a silver 1998 VTR as my first car. The car has just sailed through its MOT and has a full service history with the last service being only 1000 miles ago. I test drove the car and decided it felt right, very right! Friday I was on the roads for a good few hours and then Saturday and Sunday I had only used it to get to and from work with no problems at all, running smooth as silk. This morning on my way to work, about 3 miles in to my journey I pulled away from a set of lights and the car started giving me a massive chugging and loss of acceleration. It happened about 4-5 times in the next 3 miles or so and then a few times on the way back home from work. Sometimes it seems fine and others it feels like im not getting anywhere and it just wants to conk out!

When leaving work tonight I noticed quite a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust as i looked out the back window to reverse. Might be part of the problem but I'm very new with cars and just started a bit of a learning curve so basically know jack shit and now i'm starting to panic hahahaaa

any help on the problem would be highly appreciated.

    Cheers, Muzz

based on your description could be ignition issue, most likely coilpack tbh

Check the four rubber ht leads going on to your spark plugs.. make sure they are on securely.

check spark plugs, icv, that everythings plugged in and your aux belt isnt loose as that puts more strain on the engine! If you can source a coilpack to try (from a mate?) it would save some money!

ahh right, cheers for the answers. I'll try sort it out in the morning then. I the problem is the coilpack would it still get me to work and back until Friday? its only a few miles travel per day.

^^^ i didnt think and saxos ran ht leads

if its not running on all four if you do regular driving the cat will ruin due to fuel being pushed through the system

Would just be driving say 5 miles in the morning and 5 late at night Tues, Wed Thurs. Don't think that comes under regular driving. Can get it to a garage on Friday just I'm not overly confident with toying with it myself as I'm still a complete noob when it comes to anything under the bonnet :s

I'll lift the bonnet in the morning and see if I can do any good. If not I'll get it in the garage on Friday. Hopefully wont cost too much...

    cheers for the info mate

seems like shes drove perfectly today, not one even small chug.

I'll keep her running over the next few days and evaluate it. its probs still worth getting it looked at just in case tho yes? just seemed a bit funny how it was just yesterday
