Wollowy feel :S *Solved*

I had a set of 4 tyres fitted all brand new, since then the car has felt horrible.

First thig i noticed was the steering wheel suddenly started setting itself at an angle and drifting very badly towards the right, could feel my arms working to keep it straight.

also, if i wiggle the steering wheel the whole car goes wollowy like its not attched to the wheels, really wierd feeling.

    Ive checked:

    Rear beam
    Droplinks (new anyway)
    Wishbone ball joints
    Tyre pressures

    They were all fine,

i checked the track rod ends and both have split thier rubbers, but would they give these sort of symptoms?

Its really odd, one day it will pull to the right, other times to the left and sumtimes its fine!

track rod ends would certainly not help things if they had some play in them ?

maybe the tyres have softer sidewalls than your previous tyres ?

does the wheel give any vibrations when hitting between 40-60?

Maybe a case of balancing or as mentioned Track Rod Ends
  4. #4
I cant tell if the rod ends have play in them, they obviously move side to side pivoting sorta thing, but i cant feel any play when i tug on them.

Its hard to tell what it is . The sidewalls are softer than my old tyres, but all tyre pressures are even to the other side of the axle. That wouldnt make it like pull over to the right!

Also heard a slight knocking noise too, it sounds just like drop links when they go, but i know for a fact theyre fine.

When i wiggle the wheel, its like the car is trying to catch up with the movment im making sorta thing. Imagine like a carvan being towed when it starts to snake, it feels just like that.

    Balancing was to 5gram.

Hope its just track rod ends then.

Yeh, I'd change the track rod ends and get the tracking 100% - then go from there

Will get some new ones ordered then. My mate just brought up top mount bearings too...possible?

Ive got some new struts this monring, so wont be a problem if it is, i just want to iliminate the problem before fitting all the new struts, reinforcment plates and brakes etc, dont want it to be all wasted effort.

I wouldn't have thought the top mount bearings would cause the car to pull from side to side, especially if it's happened after fitting new tyres ?

    Sounds a funny one though.

lol, the top mount bearings for the snaking i thought. Its abit confusing.

Theres 2 problems which i think now might be different, but both came on at the same time.

    The pulling to one side

    and the snaking.

Il try these new struts etc with new tracking rod ends, see what happens. fingers crossed!

Yeh give them a try, if not then you can rule them out !

as i said this morning, partially siezed lower balljoint would give these symtoms, top strut mounts on ducato vans sieze up and make the steering pull quite regular, i've changed quite a few on them but never done them on a saxo/106

These new struts should sort it out hopefully, or il fin dout what it is anyway when its all apart!

Ok found out the problem today when i jacked my car up...

The top spring pan has broken away from all the bearing up and top mount. All the bearings are showing with a few fallen out, and the spring has come away from the top spring pan so basically, its all just floating around and the damper is the only way its staying together.

This should be a warning about using 60mm springs on OE Dampers, its seriously dangerous as ive found out!

When i get my coilovers fitted, il take pics of this broken one and make a thread about it, should warn a few poeple.

Bloody hell !!! Sounds pretty nasty tbh if the top spring pan has come away !!

It is, its a mess under there, the whole lot at the top is all separated, no top mount bearings or spring (as its too short for the damper) and no top spring pan

Just the damper bolted to the top mount!
