Leaking oil from head?

  1. #1
Today i was heatwraping my manifold and noticed that there was quite a lot of oil coming from the head going down behind where the alternator is.. The patch seems to start at the manifold just from the first outlet no others. Is it possible to leak oil from the exhaust outlets?? Also why is it doing this?

to be honest, any oil leak in that area would indicate head gasket leakage round the main oilway

I hope its not! i cant be doing with this piece of shit any more!
    Anyone else have any idea?

mine leaks from there aswell buddy, ent got a clue how it gets between the manifold!!! ive got more oil in my bay than i have in my engine! dont give a f**k about the oil anyway, puttin a vts in the slut by june happy days!! just hope it dont die on me untill then

Just added some pics to make it a bit easier for people to understand what i mean

i have the same problem, had it into the garage, hydrocarbon and compression checks done, nothing to indicate hg failure apparently

thats because its the oilway in the head gasket leaking, not the fire seals in the gasket, hydrocarbon and compression is only affected if these fail and allow compression gases get into the cooling system

yep mine did it in the same place, design weakness

i know its vague, but its only on 42k at the moment, how much longer am i looking at it before i start to see significant problems??
  10. #10
having looked at the pics i'd say you're right! if head gasket oilway fails oil usually runs down not up!! possible fault with rings on no1 cylinder allowing un-burnt oil to be pumped into manifold? clutching at straws here lol
  11. #11
So what does it look like is wrong with it then guys? i have no idea about engines really..
  12. #12
as said above, the piston rings in cylinder one. thats the only thing i could think it could be coming from where it is
  13. #13
    *cough* 16v *cough*

    that means engine rebuild basically?

Gonna have to be if ive got to get the rings changed lol

all four piston rings have got on mine, ive even got blue smoke cumming though the air vents!! thats when you no it bad!! lol just gonna drive it till it dies then do a heart transplant (vts)

So does everyone think it's deffo the piston ring and not the headgasket? Would this make the car slower? Aceleration seems a bit sluggish
  17. #17
Same issue when I got my 1.1, same place, looked the same. Bear in mind that oil likes to travel a bit, so the bit above would be normal.

Anyway, mine was like that for 2 years, just decided to change the headgasket and im waiting to see how it turns out.

    I'd say headgasket
  19. #19
Yeah sparco tom said headgasket too.

    Stupid french shite!
  20. #20
I'd get the parts to do the headgasket, and then maybe have a look inside the exhaust port when you've got the manifold off - I'd be very suprised if it was a piston ring tbh !

may aswell do waterpump at the same time eh?

yeh I would, but depends on the mileage and whether its been done before
  23. #23
Its on 64k. I had the cambelt done with full service on 59k
  24. #24
When I changed my headgasket at 60k I'd only had my belt and water pump done at 51k I think so didnt replace.

When I locked the timing etc off as well and took off the timing belt covers I found I didnt need to take the timing belt off fully, so as long as you mark the belt teeth and its place on the sprocket you can just slip off the top part of the belt and put it back in exact same place, still tensioner to do obviously

I've seen loads of 8V engines leak around there. I would live with it personally.
  26. #26
I have to live with it tbh.. im skint. when i do have money ill get a 16v lump for it
  27. #27
I take it you're not noticing the oil level dropping on the dipstick?

    Nope.. strange

I wouldn't worry about it until you notice it getting worse... i.e dropping on the ground and the oil level falling.

Went to the shop in it today and the temp was at full within minutes, then when i pulled up it went down to half. is this normal when the headgasket has gone?

Could be thermostat? If you take it out and put it in boiling water it should open.

I'd test that - if it's fine then I'd get a 'sniff' test done at the garage - it tests for any exhaust fumes in the coolant - then check for any 'mayo' in the oil/coolant.

Thermostat is working i changed the temp sensor in it a few weeks ago aswel. hmm

I'd budget to do the hg personally - do it before it goes and you're stuck at the side of the road.

Mileage wise it's about due tbh - 99% of them go around the 65k-70k mark

I have also seen many many many 8v's seeping oil behind the alternator, you will know when it actually becomes a real issue so personally i wouldn't worry about it either

Going to get the HG done soon as the cash is available
