306 DTURBO tuning ??

  1. #1
Hi there , unfourtunetly i shall be selling my saxo reasonably soon and am hoping on geting a 306 d turbo , seen a few guides on how to get a fair bit more power out of them by just tuning the fuel pressure , maximum fuel pressure and boost pressure, just wondered if anyone on here had done so and if so was it easy enough ??

Cheers lads, i won;t tell people how to tune a car but with a bit of research you may find the answer online. Without sounding like a cock it's a bit of a skill knowing how to tune them, which took me years to perfect. Next step for me is to start taking pump apart and replacing heads, grinding LDA pins, shimming the avange and governor springs.

One thing i will say... if you want a fast 306 dturbo, make sure it's got a Bosch fuel pump. Lucas is crap.

i would agree, its worth getting the tuning set up properly, i got my 306 done by the derv-doctor over derbyshire way, and the difference was great and that was with a lucas pump. Bosch are the ones though but they are available on earlier cars but can be transferred but i think you lose the immob then iirc.

if you do find somewhere to do it yourself you will most likely end up in a cloud of black smoke

    Just take it to krisB

The immobiliser is in the stop solenoid, so (I haven't had a ghay lucas one before) if the bosch solenoid is the same as the lucas one then you could just transfer it over, thus keeping the immobiliser.

As previously mentioned tho, the early D-Turbs have a bosch pump (but not all), however the phase 2 97 onwards ones all have lucas pumps.

The lucas pump is okay, but its a big restriction on what you can do, and commonly produces a 'smokey' tune. The Bosch VE pump is used in all sorts of cars and vans so you can mix and match parts to gain more power (i.e. the head off a tranny van VE, which I assume is what Kris is gonig for). pump is easy enough to do anyway, involves removing the timing belt - but the timing is a peice of pish too as it all bolts together and with a bit of practice it takes about 15-20 mins to do.

My old ph1 D turbo tuned up pretty damn well - the ratios ended up far too short as it would come on around 1.5k and pull right up the revs very easily. It didn't smoke at all, but its down to how you tune it. Best way is to do small adjustments, test it (go for a drive), then do some more. You'll be better off with a boost gauge as you don't really want to go too far past 14psi with the interwarmer as it won't be very productive, but the best cheap mod you can do is to get the inlet, intercooler and pipework off a 406 or Xantia as they have a factory front mount. Takes some fiddling to fit but is worth the hassle.

can't edit so to clarify, 'it all bolts together' was in reference to the fact that the timing can be 'locked' using small bolts (one in the cam, 2 in the pump, one in the block to lock the flywheel) and the tensioner is automatic (spring plunger) - its fool proof...ish.

Nahh thats kool guys i do appreciate the advice , i've seen a few vids on you tube of how to do them , but to be honest i think i'm going to get a HDI .. mainly because it's cheaper to tax , insure and does more MPG and it has more torque from standard

imo the HDi is worth the extra money for the reasons stated. Providing you get one with no Engine management/ electrical faults. Stupid high pressure diesel lift pumps

i mean my dad had the HDI and we did 240,000 miles in it and it still went really well , not one mechanical failure there quite nippy aswell , thinks its worth the extra cash , plus a simple remap shud get me up to 120 bhp .. from there can do stuff such as front mounted intercooler and upping the boost etc

the complete wiring loom/electrical system is a downside tbh lol.
I highly doubt you'll be dissapointed. I've always loved missed sure footed the way my 306 handled compared to the flighty saxo

Yeahh , when we got my dads 306 we had problems with it starting , was really weird , replaced all the wiring to the ignition and after that it was perfect .. do you think that the 306 handles better than the saxo then ?? the seats i think are pretty nice aswell as there half leather and they look to hold you very well .. thing is they do hold there price quite well

Also .. in terms of acceleration they say there mean to do 0-60 in 12.3 secs.. just wondered if that accurate or not ??

remember peugeot do all their 0-60 times full tank of fuel and car fully loaded (2 fully grown aduts, luggage and a dog iiirc) It will be a second or so quicker than that, but yes. i do think my 306 handled better than the saxo
  21. #21
Yeahh thats cool , well i remember my furio was meant to do 0-60 in like 17 secs but i can do it in late 10's early 11's EASILY so just thought it mgiht be quicker lol, with a remap i expect that cud get down to 9s ?? thats good to know, was yours lowered ??

standard ride height on uniroyal rainsports up front, stuck like shit to a shoe mate. lol. I reckon with a map you'll be in the 10's possibly even the 9's depending on the condition of the engine, but its not 0-60 these excel on its roll on torque.. where it matters 99% of the time in the real world like 30-70 torque is awesome

not the tidiest but it was a lovely first car
  23. #23
thats pretty ncie mate , yeahh apprently with a map you can get like 80 in 3rd which is pretty kool , just want the good acceleration through the gears, my mate has a 90 bhp 1.8 golf driver if i can beat him down the straight i'll be happy lol, the one i want is a 3 door , also whats the most you got out of it , meant to do like 112 mph ?

Does anyone wanna buy my furio ?? lol

when i had my zx volcane it would do 60 in about 9seconds i still have the vid on my fone that was std injectors just some pump mods and boost just above the .9 bar std
    colin
  32. #32
thats pretty sweet , i reckon with a remap the hdi can get a pretty good 0-60.. standard it does it 1 sec quicker than the dturbo , so after a remap it'll be quick i reckon , gunna eventually get a front mounted intercooler also , possibly hybrid turbo , who knows lol
