How hard are these to change? i know its a gearbox apart job..
differential pinion bearing

#2I'll have a look online tomorrow.
You mean the differential bearings yes? If so then gearbox apart, pull off old ones then press on new ones.
Or you mean the planetary (sp?) cogs/gears?
Input shaft bearing? -
#3well i got told by b.e.t transmission that my diff pinion bearing is shagged as it makes a whurry whining noise in neutral and when in gearr, but dissappears when u put the clutch in...
-
#4Input shaft? Clutch release bearing?
Does it do it in neutral when you are stationary? If so then it's nothing to do with your diff. -
#5yeah it makes a noise when im in neutral stationary, but i can also hear it making the noise when im driving through all gears especially low rpm....
-
#6sounds alot like a release bearing/input bearing
-
#7so how would i know if it was the diff pinion bearing? i just dont want my box to pack up as im driving somewhere lol
-
#8Well when you are stationarry your diff isn't moving, so how can it be a diff bearing?!
I would have thought a transmission place would know how a diff works.
Input shaft bearing or clutch release bearing -
#9Trying to create work maybe?
Like Ross is saying it wouldnt make a noise when sitting still.
Normally the diff bearing will cause a sticking feeling when cornering, will feel like the inside wheel keeps running through glue. Ruins cornering. Can also, click and whine -
#10ohh i see, also i what i did forget to mention was, when im coming to a stop with the clutch in i can hear like a weird whining noise. its loud then go's quiet and dissappears when stationary, any idea's what this may be too? Cheers for your help guys
-
#11does it do it through every gear or just certain ones?
-
#12well the first whining noise which i mentioned happens in every gear, but the second noise only happens when i put the clutch in and when im slowing down for something like a speedhump....
-
#13simple answer.
Most cost effective thing to do is buy a second hand box and have it fitted.
Just drive the current box till it goes bang.
Then get a new clutch and release bearing fitted at the same time -
#14yeah i was planning to do that anyway, was just wondering as this is the second gearbox that has done it to me, ive put numerous gearbox's in saxos for my self and mates motor's, it begins to get a pain in the arse after a while, i didn't know if its a common fault with the MA gearbox's.

#15MA boxes are made of chocolate, cheese and pipe cleaners i believe
-
#16Sounds like they want work.
Toms spot on - I'd buy a new clutch and either get the input shaft bearing replaced for a metal caged one or second hand box.
Remember you take a bit of a gamble with a 2nd hand one. If I was closer I could change the input shaft bearing over in a day if the box is off the car - needs a few replacable parts from Citroen though
