Vtr sounds a bit Like a van, Timing belt change would you say ?

Hey, I know the title is a bit vague but i have a VTR, Y reg, Mk2 98bhp.
Basically my mechanic fully serviced it not long ago ( no problems, He said spark plugs were basically brand new etc etc ) and it runs fine, but it doesnt sound too good as of late.. Its had very good service history and only had 52k on the clock. So its been looked after very well. Its standard by the way.
Would you say things get a bit rackety when its time for a new timing belt, Cause this hasnt been replaced yet ?
I think this may be my next plan of action, Is there any signs to look out for which would suggest fiting one. Thank you in advance people !

Timing belt does not make noise when it needs replacing hence people leaving it until it's to late and it snaps on them. More likely is that you need to set the valve clearences (AKA tappits). Your mechanic should be able to do this quickly enough but he wil need the engine to be cold to set them accurately.

With the vehicle at 52k, then the cam belt should be replaced. The things to look for on the belt is a) Obvious wear (Strands coming from the belt), b) Cracking along the teeth of the belt, c) Any form of contamination from oil, anti-freeze etc. When the belt is off, look very well at the water pump for any weeps or seepage and for free wheeling. The tensioner should also be examined for wear or seizure. The belt itself though should not really make the car soundlike a van, so look around for other probable causes.
