fuel level indicator

   I have searched the forum and cant seem to find an answer, i think its just the pump/sender unit in the tant but here goes, i havnt had the car long, its an 02 vtr and i brimmed it with petrol to go to wales, i got about 30 mile down the motorway and the fuel guage dropped right down to empty then straight back up to full and did this 3/4 times then went back to normal reading, it did this a couple more times on the way down but once it got just under half a tank it stopped doing it and has been normal ever since, i filled up again last night and it did the same but on the 3rd time it stayed at empty until i flicked the igniton off and on then it read normal, seems to just be above half a tank when it does it, not a serious problem as i know thers fuel in there, any help/solutuons welcome, thanks

   p.s i can get a pump unit out of a y reg vtr from the scrappy down the road but would it fit?

   yes mate i think all the pumps/sender units are the same.

   i am having exaclty the same problem with mine sometimes it works fine and reads normal then othertimes it just stays on red. or just goes up and down 4 or 5 times before working again:/ let me know if ya have any luck fixing it??

   Check there is no wear in the wires (under rear seats)
   
   I had a similar problem and the cause was the bar that sits from the unit down to the tank was bent, therefore not reading the right amount.
