clutch ? cambelt ? G/Box?.....odd noises

hi.....prob is roughly as follows :-

    As above..

Paxo is making some odd noises as of the trip home tonight....

    symptoms :-

low pitch 'whine' when you are holding (not accelerating or decelerating - just slightly on the gas) speed....

low pitch whine when clutch depressed and 'coasting' at speed

pitch of the noise doesnt change if revved

noise stops below about 45 - 50 mph (and doesnt exist if ticking over (stand still or coasting))..

no vibes thru the car otherwise......

It sounded like something was rubbing a belt or even arch liner but nothing is contacting far as i can tell (getting dark when i parked up)..

I'm probs paranoid about the cambelt as :-

    1) Its a french P.O.S (my first french motor and not off to the best of starts)
    2) racking up 700 mile a week
    3) clocking to around 80k

It has no PAS (being a BASIC of BASIC models).... any thoughts gents ??

    cheers all..

    StuartG

(* at speed is between 60 and 70 ish MPH)

As the noise does not change when revving and changes with road speed I would rule out engine/cambelt scenario.

It's likely to be a wheel bearing, try to listen to the noise when cornering, if it gets louder one way and quieter the other I am sure it's wheel bearing. Milage for these to got is about right as well.

    cheers for that matey..

its going in for a service and front pads next week (i hope) so will get my man to check them then...

oddly tho, the noise hasnt happened on the way home tonight (or the journey to work this morning (45 mile each way on the M1 etc))....

I'm not convinced its bhearings tho (but i'm no mechanic)... escort van i had ate bearings for breakfast lunch and tea (for fun) and that was more of a rumble (which progressed to a more grindy noise as its progressed).....could be wrong tho...I usually am....

oh and to add, its had a new back box and centre section about 2 months back (new rubbers too).......

    Most odd.
