HELP rear arm!? Axle?! Beam?!

  1. #1
Hey this morning got my car back from my mate servicing it and he gave me some bad news, of what he thinks i need a new axle, the pictures will explain, but basically the cars pulling a tiny bit to the left and has about 1cm of play when you jack the car up take the handbrake off and wobble the wheel. Please if you know the problem and the answer or even just maybe think you know, please tell me. I cant afford to be buying a new axle then dropping it 60mm again plus all the fitting costs etc!?!

looks like your shock isn't tightened all the way up, looks like their is a small gap maybe tighten it up abit and see if you can get rid of the problem?

also put the car on the ground and see if their is much camber

cheers for advice so far, bit of a bump as i want as much input as possible

Hi Cal, err yeah your axle is screwed mate. Same thing happened to mine, I bought a 'refurbed' one, fitted it and that was also fooked, so I just refurbed my old one (it wasn't in bad condition though) and fitted that again and its fine now. Its a proper ball ache of a job though!

That's some seriously bad rub in the arch mate :|

orite Harv , How much did you have to fork out for it all, and so you just bought the bearing and pins kits and did it your selff??? i cant do with buying a new one, garage labour cost, swapping my spec over and then getting it lowered again !
  14. #14
if im rite im axles come already lowered to how you want them so way up the cost of a second hand axle and lowering to a newly refurbed on already lowered

WTF... the top of your damper isn't even connected to anything! The bottom damper bolt doesn't look like it has been fitted properly either. Either that or the rubber bush has come out.

    Should be like this:

How the hell did your mate not diagnose the rogered shock? He clearly hasn't a clue what he's doing.
  16. #16
take the arm off see what the beam is like if beam is ok replace the bearings
  17. #17
as stated above whoever fitted the rear damper clearly hasnt fitted it correctly for starters.
  18. #18
You need a new damper and someone who has half a clue about cars to fit it for you... imo.
  19. #19
That damper deffo aint right lmao
  20. #20
    i like the lack of bumpstops . . .
  21. #21
lol, ye me an my dad were thinking that, but now everyones saying the dampers gone, or need tightening others say axles scred , IM axle e-mailed me back saying the axles had it, but im not to sure tbh, and my mates been a mechanic for 7 years, i hope it is just the damper!!!!! Thanks to everyone who has commented so far, please more opinions would be even better, i dont have a clue when it comes to the "back" of cars, i only know about engines and under the bonnet lol. Thankyou!!

Can you take a picture of the car with it actually sat on the floor and not jacked up?

Fit the damper correctly first before you take any pictures.

    Pictures directly from behind

wheels basically should look like: | | and not leaning inwards like / \

As said the damper deffo isn't on right, but this wouldn't cause the wheel to sit like (/) though, your axle is definitely shagged. Your tyre should have a good 10+mm from hitting the wheel arch like it has been doing.

Well as for cost wise, if I hadn't of paid for the 'refurbed' axle that ended up being worse than the one I already had I would have only paid like £60. I didn't replace by stub axles/pins as they were hardly pitted, its fine now though!
Thing is though, the longer you leave it the worse it becomes as your bearing is just eating into your stub meaning that a new axle will be needed.

Also see if it is the wheel bearing as that would cause the wobble and camber but 90% of the time it is the axle thats gone.

At the moment i am hoping to god that its not the axle, when you look at the car from the back theres no camber, and i know how the arch rub got there i had three in the back and it is dropped 60mm . . . . . think im going to replace the bearings, and get a new damper on the go, see what that does. Fingers crossed ey. Thanks for the help you lot!

Surely having no damping on one arm (as good as) would give it some sideways movement, and possibly cause the camber?

I wouldn't even be driving that around... get a new damper fitted asap.

haha iknow i dont want to be, but im leaving for scotland tomorrow, dundee, endinbrugh, glasgow, hastings, crewe n then newport , then back to north wales.
I know its suicidle but ahwell. i'll let you know how it goes

just take that shock off and put it back on properly, there looks like a good 1-3 cm of movement caused by that shocker, just sort it you could cause more harm to other road users around you then its byebye NCB.

sorting damper out this week, just got home from scotland , no problems with the car whats so ever apart from stupidly big speed bumps in edinburgh
