106 rallye gearbox

im looking to pop a 106 rallye gearbox in my 1999 vtr i hear their ment to be really good for accelaration any one done this any suggestyions or gearboxs for sale

Any box other than a vtr box is going to cause a fair improvement to acceleration friend.

as above the vtr box is a very long box . the s1 box will make a big difference. not good for motorway miles though as your on about 4k revs at 70. and 5k revs at 80 . the s1 box are quite hard to come by and if you do come across one make sure its genuine. also it has probably had a hard life so would probably need some kind of rebuild if it hasnt had one already

there are also 2 rallye boxes the 1.3 s1 box and the 1.6 s2 box the 1.3 will give better acceleration and the 1.6 box will give better top end. my mate has a 1.6 8v 106 xsi, and that has the s2 rallye box on as standard and i can tell you when i still had my vtr engine the xsi was so much quicker, didnt feel too far off the acceration on my 16v engine (obv 16v engines will pull harder up the rev range and 8v pull stronger lower down the rev range), ive got a 1.1 box on my 16v and ive managed 110mph out of it and that was the most i could get before i had to lift off so it would go quicker, but considering its only a 1.1 box the top end doesnt seam too bad

cool i havie looked at a couple of them boxes mainly the s1 1.3 box as im not to bothered about my top end i rarely get there but do love a good nawt to sixty as i'm mainly going to try and make it a little nippy handling car and want it for handling tracks and technical b roads

an s1 box will limit you to about 100mph on a vtr...

ive got a s1 box in my vts and it limits in 5th about 120mph, is this right? also ive put the vts box in the vtr but it aint running yet to see what it goes like, would this be better than the vtr box? sorry to hijack your thread btw lol

thats ok ma vts box'es are easier to get hold of so if it works and works well tell me i would like graph read outs on all tests and a well made powerpoint presentation nah just give us a post on hear if it faster and how big the smile on your face if it works

I've got an XSI on a VTS... oh yeah it makes the S accelerate a bit quicker... obviously tops out sooner. and kills my MPG but it's good fun. basically an s1 is like 2x more fun than an xsi box.

ive got the 1.4 and that pretty darn close to the s1 box and im getting 200miles from £40 lol

I love the short nippy ratio's but I do a lot of motorway miles so I'm severely tempted to pop the S box back on - until I can create the ultimate saxo box...

the ultimate box gives you 4 short ratio's and a 5th gear for v-max runs with an ATB.

In essence... s1/xsi FD, sports gear set (gti/VTS/s1/xsi), 5th gear from VTR.

sports cluster isnt spaced very well , so if you have a peaky engine its still got the epic rpm drops

Just putting an S1 together for Moxy which will have a vtr 5th - will be interesting to see of it makes a difference on the road

Youd have to use the 5th from an early VTR though wouldnt ya? As the later VTR boxes use the same 5th gear as those other gearboxes?

Yeh one of them 0.767 Ratios 5ths off the 1.1s etc would be sorted wouldnt it!

Think i might try 1.1 final drive in a vtr sport cluster gearbox, would be almost the same as the 1.4 XSI box then.

only problem I think is that the old skool boxes have a dirty big nut on the end whereas the newer ones have a circlip... and they're not interchangable.

No worries, I'll give you a pm later on when not on my phone - if you just want a different 5th on there then could do it with the box in the car.

Need a few parts from Citroen but nothing too hard to do.

I don't think changing the 5th over makes a huge difference on the road in reality, but i suppose every little bit helps.

awesome. I was talking to moxy about you doing his s1 box when I popped down but I didn't realise you were stuffing a different 5th on it otherwise I would have given you a shout.

It does make a difference

I've done the calcs...

0.767 5th gear on a 4.29 FD (xsi) = Standard VTS 5th gear... it makes the difference of about 10% fuel comsumption in my case which is why I'm keen to get a taller 5th back on - £150 per year at this rate - so it's defo worth it for me.

this all confusing but what if i have the rallye box up to 4th then keep my vtr 5th that way when im on technical stuff i would have accelration which is needed but for road use i have a realistic 5th gear

Well this is what am saying aswell, the VTR 5th (unless its the early box) will be the same as S1/S1 Rallye XSI and VTS boxes.
