#2Cheap engine mods? Depends on what you class as cheap, to some TB's could be considered.. lol. IMO your best just getting a VTR breathing properly (decent air filter set-up, Manifold, Exhuast system/Decat). If you wanted to go any further i would say to drop an S engine in there and start from there.

#3Forgot to mention about gearbox's. As the VTR box is the longest in the range you can see acceleration gains from fitting more or less any other saxo gearbox. Most people either get the VTS box or 1.1 box as the ratios are fairly short (only difference really being the weaker diff in the 1.1 box). I would suggest the 1.1 gearbox as you can pick these up for as little as £25!

#4As above, exhaust manifold, induction or good cold air feed to better panal filter, exhaust system and gearbox are essentials

#5not really any decent "cheap" engine mods, even if you do the above
air filter- £80 (for a cheap raceland) or could get a panel filter and cold air feed cheaper and will be better really
manifold- £160 (for a cheap raceland again)
superprint exhaust- £200
so just thoses three breathing mods will cost £440 and you'll be lucky to notice any gains just a nice sound lol
for £300 i bought vts enigne, unlocked ecu and loom, week old vts rad and fan and everything i needed for the conversion fitted my self and now have the best engine you can bolt directly in to a saxo and ive got an extra 30bhp its so worth the money, to get 120 out of a vtr on top of the other mods i mentioned you would need
a cam and vernier pulley ie ph3- £190
remap-£200+
so your easily looking at around £830 and thats if you fit everything your self including the cam which invovles taking the head off and while your at it you'll need a new head gasket and bolts and you might aswell replace the cambelt tensioner and water pump which will cost around £60 so if you want anything near a vts out of a vtr engine save up around a grand or just fit a vts engine for £300- its worth every penny
EDIT: i am being a bit harsh i picked up a 106 rallye inlet, head and raceland 4-2-1 manifold pretty cheap and they could see around 110bhp but again its only cheap if you fit everything yourself even then the rallye head/inlet would need a remap, please dont waste your money on a 8v, i only modded my 8v cus i got the above cheap even then i sold it all and bought a 16v engine -
#6Port and Polished Throttlebody.
Decent Panel Filter.
Exhaust.

#7You could buy a Raceland exhaust manifold for £150, second hand Magnex for £130, de-cat for £50 and a K&N panel filter for £25.
That's £355, plus by the time you've got new gaskets, clamps etc it's going to be kncoking on for £400. From personal experience I would say it is worth doing. You will only release a handful of BHP and see an improvement in torque but the car will respond better, sound better and go a tad better too.
Also gives you good foundations for a cam and TB's if you want to do that later on. -
#8Thanks for all the advice people! might jsut look in to gettinga vts sometime im 20 in a weeks time so might be alright on insurnace (Y)

#9The best thing you could do on the cheap is look for a 2nd hand 4-2-1 manifold, should be able to pick one up for under £100 and they make quite a difference to the power delivery, even with a stock exhaust. And you can pick up a replacement panel filter for about £30.
Wont necessarily increase BHP, but will smooth out the power curve if you get you what I mean.
VTS insurance should be around £1k now ure 20
