Rubbing/Grinding when turning left and on idle?!?

   Hi all
   
   I drive a Mk1 VTR and I'm stumped with this.
   
   My problem is when i turn sharp left at say 30mph+ i get a rubbing/grinding noise. So to me it says CV/Driveshaft or wheel bearing.
   
   But..
   
   After a trashing the car makes the same noise on idle. So the CV or wheel bearing isnt moving. what could it be? Any ideas greatly appreciated.

   Pas pump is where I'd look

   Thanks should i be looking for play in the PAS pump?
   
   Anyone else could lend a hand?

   I'd say it's the pump so won't be play in the rack like
   
   stick your head under the bonnet and get a freind to turn lock to lock and listen
   
   pump is located in front of the gearbox so a rough idea were to listen like
