Skimmed head + ph3's

  1. #1
Im interested in upgrading my cams in my VTS ... at the moment i have Kent pt50's (mild cam) and i want the wildest cam i can use on std bottom end and std inlet ...

Was looking at ph4's but they require pocketed pistons so ph3 it is ...

however when my head gasket was done about 2 months ago the guy skimmed my head and then took some more off to up the compression more, he said it wasn't the max, but he had took a fair bit off (i asked for numbers but he cant remember) he said there was still a fair few skims left ... do you reckon i will get away with ph3's or not?

or is there a wild-er (sp) cam i can run? will be getting mapped and im not bothered about low end power or idle

By the sounds of it, I'd say you'll be very close/too close to time up the PH3's and have a safe valve clearance.

What headgasket did he use? A repair gasket or original thickness gasket?

was brought from local motor factory ... it was the best one they did ...

    on the invoice it says:
    H/SET CIT/PEU TU5J4 16V 1587CC

i have no idea was the thickness was or the make ...

The cost was £98.50 for the head set ...

well my head was skimmed down, and i used ph3 if you go too far then you will not be able to timing them up correctly.

but take to the place you got it machined, they could measure, if they have the data of the standard size!

that what my guy did with my head so i knew what was tkaen off the head before i got the engine

98 quid for head set, sound expensive! standard size is 1.5mm, the reapir h/g are 1.7mm thick,

should be ok, but always dry run once biult to make sure!!

If my heads got to come off again then i would just get another (maybe a jp4) p + p that with some ph3's and then swap them over

can get 3 size from motorfactors!

but 1.7mm is the thick from motorfactors i think!

Also ph3's are the wildest i can use on standard bottom end and standard inlet correct?
  14. #14
yes them or 708's are really,

i ran them fine with standard bottom end, and also with bodies.

but ph4 will not be able to timing up correctly as the clearance are not eunf of stnadard pistons!

1.5mm clearance with ph3 and standard engine, i very much doubt he will of took over 0.5mm off the head so imo you'll be fine with them. just time them up right.
