polished and ported head

basicali and in middle of rebuilding my vts head, and plan the usual tb and cams, wont to head my head polished and ported, is it litterali as simple as, getting an air die grinder and porting out the inlet and exhaust wholes on the head then polishing them up? if so how much do you grind it back?

sorry if this been posted befor.

    in a word, no.

you don't want 100% smooth inlet ports

    haha, what is it then?

ok cheers racnchz, what about the exhaust outlets? is there a diy way to do this or dose it need to be sent away somewhere?

exhaust ports are generally smoothed off to help stop the build up of carbon deposits over time.

Headwork is a true art-form and is 100% based on experience and knowing what works - don't attack it with a die-grinder unless you have some form of measurements to go by and you know what you are aiming to do. There are water galleries reasonably close so don't go carving it out like a pumpkin.

yer thats what i way worried about, proply best to get it sent away to be done then, you no a rough price for it? and what kindaplaces do it?

IMO, the only places I'd send my head are GMC, QEP and Sandy Brown, but there are many more that you could use, Sabre Heads, CNC heads, HiFlow Heads, LAD and I could go on

Depends on what you want done, but for worthwhile headwork I wouldn't expect change from £600-£1k

didt think it was that much to have it polished and ported, when you say worth while head work what would tht consist of?

Depends on your budget tbh and what your engine spec is.

I wouldn't port and polish a standard head on a standard engine, can think of better ways of pissing £500 up the wall if you aren't going to fit any other parts to the engine.

If you are running cams, TBs, forged pistons with large cut-outs, turbo etc. then it's another ball game IMO.

Different people will tell you different things.

Generally it involves larger inlet/exhaust valves, removing casting marks whilst tailoring the shape, diameter and flow of the ports maybe involving port matching the head to the exhaust and inlet manifolds, grinding in the valves with different angles etc. the list can go on.

What sort of price you thinking for headwork? IMO save your money as you are likely to get ripped off if getting work done for £200

It's a huge topic and I've tried to read books about it but I feel I've only scratched the surface - if you aren't sure about what you are paying for then I wouldn't pay for the work to be done.

thansk for help mate, the set up will be ph3 and tbs, unsure of the thottle bodies though, and as for bottom end i was going to leave it standard, also proply fit a lightend and balanced flywheel... defenant plans are, tbs and cams standalone ecu, just wondering if theres anything else ie polished and ported head worth while whilst am at it.

IMO I wouldn't get it done unless you have a spare £800ish to chuck at the head for some work to be done on it.

In the grand scheme of things you'd be better off spending £800 on brakes/suspension and live with an engine that has 10bhp less once you've got TB's and cams

tbh rather spend the "800quid spare cash" on track days tbh, my plans are, tb, usure witch, ph3 cams, stand alone again unsure whitch, oil catch tank, and suspension wise i plan to fit, Bilstein B8 Dampers with eibach pro spring witch i already have, and gti6 brakes, sound a decent setup? and anything i have missed?

sounds like you're along the right lines.

Might wana think about some stiffer bushes if your's are getting old? Some sticky rubber and IMO a baffled sump, but people have run without one with no really problems.

B8 and Eibach might not be the best combination as you'll want some stiffer front springs, maybe some faulkner 155lb ones - I'm not 100% how they feel with B8s though

yer plan on getting, powerflex lower gear box mount, and have them for in the wish bones as i have brand new wish bones and antiroll links, was thinking maybe get the GRP-N TOP STRUT MOUNTING, off gmc, i personali thought tht faulkner springs would be beta, but i look on kam racing and it mentions b8 with eibact springs, so not to sure will contact kam racing about it, and yer was looking at baffled slump aswell... even though am not to sure what they r/do lol

search on google about baffled sumps.

Don't buy things for the hell of it, find out what they do, and then have a search on here to see if people have fitted them/had problems to see if it's worth it

just been looking the baffled slump up tonight, i get what it is know and what it dose, but just seems lot of dosh off gmc for what it is, then dose it need to be welded in? if you was running tht kind of set up would you personali fit one?
