Fitting a Mk1 VTS engine to a Mk2 VTS

  1. #1
    As above,

    first question:

If i was to swap the engine only from a Mk1 VTS to a mk2 VTS, keeping the VTS loom and ECU etc, just changing the engine/box unit. this should be ok? as i thought logically that they must make the engine's the same, otherwise that would be too costly to make new moulds for the Mk2. only difference i know of is the item on the mk2 above the exhaust manifold. can't remember what it is called lol.

    thanks

the mk1 has a 1 plug ecu and the mk2 has a 3 plug mate. you would need to change the wiring loom
  3. #3
not all mk2s were 3 plug
  4. #4
you can fit a single plug engine in to a three plug car with a three plug ecu and loom but most of the sensors will have to be changed, or you could fit the single plug loom and ecu along with the single plug engine in to your three plug car but you will have to cut the bigger black connector off that connects it to the interior loom and solder on the connector from the three plug loom

Ok well i will just change the sensors then, what is so different about the sensor's i would of thought citroen wouldn't of bothered to change them to save cost and that?

well personally i havent done this, when i did my conversion i bought a single plug engine as i knew it was as straight fit, all i was told was that most of the sensors are different, the actual blocks are the same its just the plastic sensors that are different so i don't think it would have cost citroen too much changing a few plastic sensors, most people would advise you to sell the engine and get one that fits straight in, its sooo easy to do it that way.

anyway arent you the guy that knows my mate loic with the stripped out gti? i think hes put a single plug engine in his three plug car, i could give him a text tomorrow and ask what he did

The Mk2s had a few extra sensors oil pressure or temp, knock sensor aswell irc.

then again you can still get mk2's with single plug engines so would these extra sensors your talking about came in when mk2's were introduced or when the three plug engine was introduced? because if mk2's with a single plug engines had these extra sensors that would mean there would be three different engines

Once the triple plug usually bosche ECUs came in.

so am i right in thinking then if you had a three plug car and wanted to fit a single plug engine then you could use the three plug ecu and loom but you would just have these extra sensors unplugged in the engine bay

Correcto, think its GMC that make an adapater loom or somthing though. Was a few years ago when James (vtr-tec) got one made by them. He had triple plug engine in his mk1 using mk1 interior loom. The engine loom was adapted. However he ended up having some running issues after a few months then put in a mk2 interior loom.

With what your saying im not sure if you could put a mk1 engine on triple plug loom as its missing the extra sensors so might decide to not run or go limp mode. But a triple plug engine with mk1 loom in a mk1 would be fine. Theyre the same block castings irc so probabaly got the socket for the sensor but just blanked off? Not sure though..

dont do it. amount of trouble i had with my conversion was ridiculous

Yeah will give loic a text in a min. i am deffo not selling my engine, its a 33k mint VTS engine. didn't buy it for the car i bought the engine for "A" car.

Will give it a bash its only a morning's work to swap them over anyway, and as to the last post its not VTR to VTS so it shouldn't be too bad its VTS to VTS.

And if there are a few extra sensors on the 3plug engine and the blocks are the same then surely the single plug engine should have blanking plates where the sensors were so just swap the sensors.

Will give it a whirl on sunday.,

according to ryanmt the sensors are all the same and only a few connections are "revised" .

yea thats what i first thought, i only thought the sensors are a bit different which just means cutting them off and soldering on new ones should be easy, but yea talk to loic he said it was easy for him to do

i did this on mine last november, pretty much a straight swap tbh

a few sensors needed to be changed and the egr valve and pump assembly and pipes were removed from my car.

edit: i used my original loom and ancillaries etc

it does work the only sensor, from what i can remember that i didnt use on my single plug engine is on on the sump. the sumps can be changed over but there is really no need. the plug is just there not in use on my car

my car runs perfect btw and has zero issues, the diagnositcs works and communicates perfectly etc

Think it might be the difference in VTR engines then i know theres one that dont have a knock sensr and another dosent, cant rmember now though

ahh, your probably right tbh, i have little experience with 8v transplants

but 16v's are definately doable, i have living proof lol
