Back box has fallen off :(

    Hey,

I'm disappointed to say that my car has decided to break again .

I was driving earlier today when it started to sound like the exhaust had blown. Upon pulling over and looking under my car, I noticed that the back box was no longer connected to the exhaust pipe (centre exhaust section?). Basically, it turns out that the end of the exhaust pipe section (the lip section that unites with the lip on the back box and is held together with a clamp) had broken off due to some severe rusting. I've included some pictures below so it's clearer what the problem is:

Here you can see where the join is meant to be between the back box and the exhaust section:

I literally took a spanner to the bolts on the clamps to try and remove the piece of exhaust section, and they crumbled off:

This is the end of the exhaust section that broke off:

I'm not really sure what to do next. Is it "simply" a case of buying a replacement centre exhaust section (not sure if this is what its proper name is), or do you reckon it is possible to weld the broken piece back on to the existing section and then buying a replacement clamp? I'm tempted to just take it up to a garage and ask them how much it would cost to solve, but I'm not sure if this is necessarily the best idea. I need the car back on the road ASAP because I'm meant to be practicing hard for my driving test!

It is, but now that I've removed all the rust and cleaned it up, it's fine underneath; most of the crap seen on that top picture was from the exhaust section. I'm not sure it's a standard back box anyway, has Stelco written on it and is stainless steel. Don't know anything about this kind of stuff though.

atm you just need a centre section and a new clamp but your current bacbox is nearly shot tbh

Cheers for the replies guys. Any recommendations for centre sections/back boxes? I'm not really wanting to rapidly increase the cost of my insurance; I've got a policy in my name on a provisional licence, so they wont treat me kindly

You will probably get hammerd for putting a non-standard backbox on. I do anyway with every insurer Ive tried.

I'd ring your insurance up and enquire before buying anything

Yeh I will do, thanks! I'm pretty sure I'm just going to have to go standard, as much as I want to upgrade
