How long does my Gearbox have Left ?

   Hi, I know my gearbox is on its way out as it makes a fairly loud whining noise in first and 2nd gear and I have totally lost 5th gear. I agreed last week to pick my friend up from Mansfield tonight which is 60 miles from me in the mean time I was going to replace my gearbox however this hasent happened because of the stupid wheel nut . So basically I was just wondering how long my gearbox is likely to last ? and is it worth the risk of driving to Mansfield and back ?

   Anyone who could give you a definite time period for how your gearbox would last would be a very brave person. It is relly an unknown and could go at any time judging by the symptoms you have given,

   No .. Lol its not worth it .. Dont risk blowing your car up to pick someone up .. Your going to be sat at high revs in 4th all the way .. Not to mention the amount of petrol you will use.

   it doesnt blow your car up....it just means you will be stranded - nothing else would be damaged

   mine did this just before easter, whining , wurring etc, 1st n 2nd wouldnt engage properly, 3 days later it went~!!!
