Event : Engine Swap Issues/Discussion

  1. #1
    Hey

just did an engine swap today from VTS to VTS now the original engine was 3plug and the donor engine is single plug, i have used the original engine loom from the car and literally just swapped the Engine+Box "Unit" and in the process had to change every single sensor, BAR 1 which is pictured below and is above the Oil filter, now the one from the old engine is Fryed, so i didn't remove it from the donor engine as my thought process was that is was a Oil level warning sensor or similar and shouldn't affect the running of the car. i also changed the coilpack.

But this is where i think i may of gone wrong, my father told me not to bother with disconnecting the ECU (the correct way to prevent it locking) as the only things we are unplugging are battery and the sensors etc on the engine. not anything from the internal loom ie we wern't breaking the circuit between the ECU and the control unit in the interior loom to make the ecu lock.

but i have an incline it has locked anyway, as when we came to start the car after we checked wires etc for half an hour or so and filled it with fluids.
Cranked it over and over and over and over. so next thing was for me to check there was fuel getting to engine. pulled off the plug, and there was plenty of fuel. so now just going to sleep on it to think of anything else.

Any thoughts anyone???? all thoughts appriciated and sorry for the essay lol, anyway heres some piccys

I won't insult your intelligence to ask you if you heard the engine running before you did the engine exchange. But are you getting spark at the spark plugs?

Yes was deffo running, i drove it about 100 miles from Truro to Devon then another 300 or so miles driving it to and fro. its an excellent engine 38000 miles. its a beaut.

    and yes getting spark.

so you're getting spark and getting fuel - crank position sensor prob ?

Nope VTS to VTS. previous owner decided that he wanted his engine to poo itself. lol

Good to hear you got it going matey !

    Cheers,

Only a few issues atm now with everything connected and put back together, exhaust etc, it hunts a little on idle, but am 100% sure thats a breather which i need to refit.
And the other is bad wear on the rack and pinon of the steering rack. is this common?? getting alot of play in the rack. (its not wheel bearing 100% sure)

track rod end ? have a look for play in the steering system

i ruled that out cos i checked both track rod ends and they were fine. ok, look at it this way, i have the front jacked up on axle stands with both wheels on and everything tight, (it also happened before i did the engine change.
so i go to check wheel bearings ie Top and bottom, diagonals then finally horizontals. and as i rock the wheel the it sort of knocks, and i can see the rack moving a small amount but i checked all the mounts and they were tight.

I presume you mean you can see the tracking bar move? There is a central bush that might have worn?

Can you see the steering wheel move slightly when you wobble the wheel?

Ok so fixed the hunting problem, and it runs excellent. only thing is there is a pipe which blows air, it used to connect to the cylindrical thing above the Manifold (specific i know) i had a thought and is it a pump which pumps air into the breather system to reduce emmisions??? i know my dads porsche has it. sooo as its a mk1 engine can i just remove the pump (or just unplug it).

Haven't checked the rack problem yet indepth but will return with info. tbh its been much less hassle than i expected and Huge amount less work than anyone made out to be.
