Earth Cable?

  1. #1
I have this blue cable running from the battery to the engine block I assume it some sort of earth, but I want to get rid of it is it necessary? Its obviously not standard so would it be worth checking if standard earths are still there? Would it be stupid to just take it off and see what happens?

remove it see hwat happens if everything runs fine ur sorted best thing to really try it mate

You will definetly require the lead to be connected from the battery. It looks as though someone has just earthed the battery to the engine. The correct way is for the earth from the battery to be connected to the vehicles body, usually to the right of the battery or on the battery holding tray.

basically there will always be the negative side of the battery connected to the engine body giving an earth point if the standard one has been removed keep this on or put a new one in where the standard should be, check this first. if you dont and your engine gets a connection from a live basically when you touch it you the route to earth and car batteries have a big current think there round about 40A and thats a canny belt so basically find out if the standard one is connected.

That's a good point, especially if the earth has been connected as per pictures and the actual earth from the vehicles body to engine happens to fail.

Thanks guys I had a look and one of the black cables coming off the negative is connected the body behind the battery. Is that enough to take the blue one off? should I look for anything else?

first time i seen earth form battery to engine, should be on body bud

ye I had never seen it before it came on the car so from what I can see the standard one is still there? so it should be fine to take it off?
  9. #9
presume so as long as battery earthed to body mate

Engine needs to be earthed as well and it is via a connection from body to gearbox, about 6" under the green airfilter location aproximately.

Just re route the wire to gearbox so it's out of the way and looks better imo.

ye i just read in haynes manual there was a gearbox earth too, il have a look see if the standard one is still there for that too and if it is il just take the blue cable off

checked the standards are both still there so I took it off and no problems so far!
