Difficult to start when warm

I've got a 99 saxo vtr that i've had for a week. It seems after you've had it out a run (even a short one) and switch it off, if you go back to it within a couple of minutes it takes a quite a bit of turning over to get it going. This doesnt happen all the time, sometimes it'll go straight away. The previous owner has had a new downpipe fitted and the gaskets are leaking. Im fixing these myself tomorrow. I've renewed and gapped my spark plugs and gave it a service aswell. The only other logical thing i can think of is sensors, wether it be the map, icv or coolant temp sensor. Anybody else had a problem similar to this? Im thinking about sticking it on the peugeot planet diag machine in work tomorrow if i get a chance.

    Cheers, Kriss

Hmm se i had thought about this aswell. Might try this as my next check then

hi, this happens to me aswell, its definitely not the starter motor as the engine would not turn over. its a sensor of some kind.

i have tested and cleaned my temp sensor, sensor was ok, the fault still persists so im thinking its MAP sensor or ICV

I would bet on that downpipe gasket leaking being the cause of the problem. Mine did this when i had a leak on my manifold. I gave it to my dad (mechanic) he sealed it all up with a new gasket and all was fine. Apparently it's due to lack of back pressure generated when running the car. As soon as you try and start again it will take a few cycles through of fuel and everything has expanded around the gasket sometimes causing more of a leak therefore a big lack of b pressure. The exhaust plays a big part on how the engine runs in general so i would make that a priority to get sorted mate.

Mines done this a couple of times i`e replaced the coil pack at the moment it seems fine, the other thing to look at is a possible air lock in the fuel system.Modern spark plugs (the majority)anyway come pre-gapped & don`t need gapping.Check your fuel filter as well it might be blocked & run some fuel cleaner through your tank.

My exhaust is leaking but i have the parts here to sort that out tonight. fuel filter i've still to change, but i have that here too. A;ready ran a fuel cleaner through it so lets hope the gaskets and filter sort that out. Cheers folks.

Problems still happening, however it does it randomly wether the engine is warm or cold. Cleaned out the icv, fitted a new starter motor and changed the map sensor. It has made fuck all difference. Starting to run out of idea's.
