They are legal providing they have:

    UK font
    Reflective background
    Manufactures' postcode
BS number (not sure that's a must?)
Have only a EU GB flag or nothing on the side

Dubmeisters have all of the above they used to sell show plate too, but stopped because everyone used them on the road and got pulled, so now only do legal ones

All new uk plates have to be acrylic, which rules out all pressed plates. The only thing you can do to be different and legal is have the square plates or if you have a short number then you can cut the plate down

standard plates just wilth a blue boarder, gb badge on the left and 3D. before you say they are ilegal they arnt! i got them out of the road legal plates section, i had them on my old saxo and got pulled up and the copper argued they were ilegal so in the end he got the traffic cops and they said they are legal aslong as you dont have the italic lettering................... 1-0 to me!

Nothing there that says they have to be acrylic

Also (and this is personal belief, I am not a lawyer or anything) if the law changes then it is just for new vehicles or plates, hence why older cars can have black and white plates, different fonts, and even such things as musical airhorns (all pre 1973 I think) and any car pre 1965 (again not entirely 100% on date but if you atre that interested google it) don't need seatbelts and only require one brake light, either in the centre or the offside. Its true
