do i need a new driveshaft?

    recently my car is making a squeaking sound and it pulls to the right when accelerating and the car shakes to high heaven when i pull off (its fine when i reverse though), i just got under the car and saw that the cv boot (?) has come loose and spat grease everywhere, do i need a new shaft or this one fixed?

    new shaft id say mine has done the same and pulls to 1 side more

    it shakes ridiculously when i pull off tho, this might not have anything to do with teh shaft though, i noticed the engine is slightly on the piss on the right hand side i think my gearbox mount may have snapped

    sounds like you need a new driveshaft.i had the same problem with the cv slipping off the hub, after that it started to make a cracking noise on full lock, i fixed mine the other day basically got under the car and refilled the cv boot with grease and sealed the gaiter back to the hub with two hose clips and its solved my problem. if your saying its squealing its probably time for a new driveshaft. how long has it been like that mate?

    Since the clip that holds the boot on is hanging down you need to either get a garage to repair it or buy a new shaft from GSF/eurocarparts

    EDIT - If it's an OE shaft try get it repaired as they are better than cheaper ones

    cheers ill take it to a garage tomorrow i think, im guessing its alright to drive on, as the only thing ill be damaging is the shaft? i only ask as i should be going down to see KrisB to get new suspension/bushes and brakes fitted and i might as well get him to fix/replace the shaft if i can get it to him, i live about 80 miles away from him do you think i should take the chance and drive it there? its all mainly M40/M25 so i shouldn't be stopping and pulling off often

    If i'm honest, you could probably repair that yourself with some grease and a jubilee clip aslong as the joint hasn't dried out and the clip has merely fell off w/o damaging the boot

    im fed up with playing cars now and if KrisB is gonna be taking my suspension apart i might as well just get him to do it i have another 2 piece drive shaft from a s1 106 xsi 16v! i just hope its the right one as there are two different kinds arent there? so basically i just wanna get the car to him

    Yeah you got flat and tapered shafts.
    Toi replace them you also need gearbox oil and possibly seals

    ive got some g/box oil from when i did the 16v conversion, do they look significantly different? ie if i put a picture up would some be able to tell me if they are the same shafts? do you know which ones a mk1 vtr would have came with? then i can put a pic up of the 106 one ive got, and i should know 100% if it'll fit

    taking the centrecap off and looking may be enough

    I believe the changeover was some time in 1999. So before '99 they should be flat.

    Impossible to tell without taking it out of the hub.

    the ends to me look completely different, or would that just be because they are made by different companies

    It has nothing to do with the thread.

    It's the part that meets with the bearing (at the back of the hub). The difference in thread just determines what hub nut you need. The longer thread requires a thick hub nut, the short thread requires a thin hub nut. They both have grooves in so the nut can be staked in place.
