Important! : Difficulty changing gear

  1. #1
Need some advice - recently it has become noticeably more difficult to change gear in my VTR (98 reg). Seems to be worse on the down shift but up shift is also stiffer. I feel as if I have to put a fair bit of pressure on the gear stick for it to get in to gear - never any bad noises etc.

The worst gear is 1st, trying to get in to first as you slow to nearly a stop is almost impossible - the car has to be at a stand still. I would never put it in to 1st at more than about 2mph but I used to be able to do that no problem, say as you get to a roundabout or junction and nearly, but not quite, come to a stop.

    Has anyone got any ideas?

Car has done about 55k so previous owner obviously hasn't driven it heavily/a lot like I am now.

Same problem as you (1997 reg)

It could just be the linkages but I've no idea where/what to look for?

Slack clutch cable therefore not fully dis-engaging clutch. Does it go into gear okay with engine off? If so tension cable using the adjusting nuts on the cable (look under the battery tray). Adjust about 15mm to start with and see how that feels. (you are looking to make the cable shorter with adjustments).

Cheers Stevo - will check it out this weekend!

Might need new linkages but hits would make the gears feel sloppy, clutch is more likely to be the problem.

Ok had a quick look today - adjuster looks fully extended so can't make it any shorter easily. How do I adjust the adjuster? :op

pack it out with washers or a new clutch

Lol - I'm definitely trying to avoid the latter.

Don't understand how I could use washers when the adjuster is at the end of it's limit/thread. Does the adjuster come off the cable itself easily?
