How much would it cost to get my engine taken apart and properly checked out by the garage?

I really wanna join the nurburgring trip 2010, but before i do i would want to make sure everything inside my block is running 100% cos if i happened to break down in germany i would be F****D!
I have some sort of strange ticking noise that has been going on for a while now and i want to know exactly what this is before i make any plans.
Has anybody ever had the engine taken apart to have a checkover and if so how much would this cost roughly? Is it a big job?

You'd probably be looking at £1000+, head gasket and cambelt alone would be around £300, plus all your other seals and gaskets, and parts you might need, and labour.

as above it will be expensive, ring round a few garages get some quotes

if your engine is running fine then just get international breakdown cover for peice of mind. Will be a lot less than stripping your engine when (if its running ok) theres no need.

get it serviced and take off the little bits that you can (new filters etc) new oil etc and just make sure its ok then get breakdown cover as said above that covers you for germany e.u etc

Cheers guys- Breakdown cover sounds like a plan.
I just have the occasional problem that always seems to sort itself out and i've never had anything go wrong with it in the time i've had it, but sometimes i notice the engine sounds really 'whirry' when i start it up and i have a sort of ongoing ticking noise which seems to increase in speed at the same rate the engine revs (with clutch in stationary) which obviously indicates that its coming from the engine itself as opposed to the gearbox or wheels etc...I think that i have some sort of damaged piston ring or something as my rocker cover spews oil (im replacing the gasket) which would appear to be a sign of pressure from the rocker cover? Please correct me if i'm wrong i could do with learning a thing or two.
I don't know alot about engines, as i (like most people on here) learn from things that have gone wrong with their cars, and i've never had engine problems before.
    Thanks for the help anyway!
