Right bought a 106 gti the other day which needed a few things to make to perfect.

Although i didnt think it would need a new gear box! well i think it does anyway lmao.

The 'sway' in nutral is VERY short and close.
It doesnt always go into 1st or 2nd!
Got into work this morning and it would go into 5th or Reverse?!!! (not the gear, the acutal 5th/Reverse line.)
Gave it a tug and it no goes in....BUT....it doesnt go into 1st/2nd!

Anyone no what it could be?

    Selector?

    New gearbox all together?

    Any help would be great

I had this problem in mine mate. Unfortunatley the bearing has probably collapsed on your lay gear. Yeah new gearbox time. Should be able to get one for around 120 quid from a decent salvage yard. Tbh mate i wouldn't continue to drive far until it has a new box as i still drove mine when it did exactly what yours has done and then found my self only able to use 3rd gear. No movement in the gearstick at all which meant i completely cooked a new clutch as well.

    no probs

Right all the above problem was due to the garage putting 2 of the gear linkages on the wrong way around!! lmao

So the box is fine, spoke to the previous owner and he said that its a £300 reconditioned one. How true that is i do not know!!

So....Box all good driving all good

    UNTILL

    NO gears atal!! WTF!!

Sometimes it will not go into ANY gear.
I stop turn the engine off and POW the gears work fine.
Carry on driving down the road and again it will not select ANY gear. Turn engine off and its fine!

Please Sax-P, what is wrong with it? lol

Sounds like more hassle than its worth mate just buy a new gearbox?
  10. #10
    Ive been thinking that tbh

Ive been told that there could be some sort of liquid on the clute plate causing it not to work!!

Could it not be a fucked clutch Tom

Sounds like an internal bearing mate. Is there any grinding chattery kind of noise coming from the gearbox when in neutral on idle with foot of clutch?
  15. #15
check that the clutch cable is tight enough, if not you wont be fully disengaging the clutch and it will still be in gear. dont go buying a gearbox until youve checked this, if the garage bodged the linkages they may well have titted this up too

Well when driving and i left the accelarator up and its rolling in gear there is somesort of gringing noise. When i press the accelerator in it stops!!

sounds like the gearbox diff bearings, its happened to 2 of mine, im sure when you cant hear it anymore (when accelerator is pressed) is only due to engine noise drowning it out. Try coasting in neutral .

the grinding noise is almost certainly your intermediate release bearing on your o/s driveshaft

sorry, i have no idea theres too much it could be. i was just saying theres no such thing as an intermediate release bearing lol
  23. #23
lol why did i put that? what the hell is that? i meant intermediate bearing that supports the heavier VT o/s driveshaft half way down, i think i may have left that post late on in the evening when my brain was tired!

sounds alot more clutch related 2 me pal i had the same problem an found out wen i stripped the box off it was a pressure spring that had broke off the clutchplate it wud let me select gears wen the engine was of but as soon as i started it ther was nothing, aslo check the clutch cable that its tight enuf this can also cause the problem, if not cut ur losses an but a new box.

this was happenin to mine then the release bearing shatterd and i had no clutch the garage said it was caused by a groove around the input shaft
