Replacing Alternator Belt

    Ive done it, originally was to remove the squeeking i get when the car starts cold, yet the noise still exists?

    Anyone know if nipping the belt and extra 5mm would work, i dont want to over-tighten...it doesnt slip when driving either only when started cold!

    i replaced mine when was squeking. i recon though if i tightened it it would have stopped

    As others have said, this isn't too difficult.

    If yours is set up the same as the one I have worked on, then I think following will be the way to do it:

    1. From underneath the alternator, slacken the large pivot bolt (15mm spanner I think).
    2. Above the alternator, slacken the pinch bolt (13mm spanner) It's hiding a little this one, but it locks the adjuster arm in place.
    3. Undo the adjusting screw (10mm spanner) until you have enough slack to remove the belt - but probably all the way in.
    4. Put on new belt
    5. Tighten the adjusting screw - 10mm until you have about 5-10mm of play in the belt in the middle. If this is easy to move, you can possibly use your fingers to tighten this up. Not too tight, as this will put strain on the alternator bearing.
    6. Tighten pinch bolt (13mm)
    7. Tighten pivot bolt underneath (15mm)
    8. Make sure there are no spanners in the engine bay, then start car
    9. If the belt is too tight, you will hear a whining noise from the belt/bearing. Stop the engine and slacken off a little - see 1 to 7.

    You're done.

    If it still squeaks, it's the alternator tensioner pulley, piece of piss to change

    Are the cambelt and the alteranator belt the same thing?

    Nop, the cambelt runs the cams and the alternator belt runs the alternator to keep it charging and the power steering and air con if you have them.

    A cambelt is also known as a timing belt.
