Coolant temp light and fan on

    Hi guys,

I just got myself a Saxo last week - generally it's been fantastic but I've had a bit of a problem with the coolant system for the last couple of days. The car is a 1.1 Forte (facelift model), X reg.

Basically, yesterday I decided to service the car, so I threw some rad cleaner in the expansion tank and went for a drive to let it do it's magic. Within five miles it had done quite a lot of magic and the entire cooling system was seized up, it had basically turned to jelly and clogged the thermostat and top rad hose. I cleared that out, but the temp warning light and the fan stayed on so I got the AA to come out and take a look. He said it was fine, all circulating properly and actually running a bit too cold now with the fan on permanently, and that it was probably the sensor at fault. Went home, flushed the cooling system properly, and spent the rest of the day driving around with the fan going crazy, had to disconnect the battery for a couple of seconds every time I stopped just the stop the fan running on. Then one time in the evening I did just the same, stopped, disconnected the battery, reconnected it again and the light went out, fan turned off and everything was back to normal - no idea why.

If I had been sensible I would have left it at that, but I decided to change the coolant sensor to be on the safe side today. However, when I disconnected the plug for the sensor the fan almost immediately started running, and it's doing the same thing all over again. Since I have no idea how I stopped it last time, I could do with some help again!

    Any help massively appreciated, cheers!

This was my very first problem and thread last year. Did exactly the same thing, changed the coolant and the fan and warning light were on, even with the engine stone cold. The solution in the end was to have the ECU re-set for £10.

try leaving your battery off for atleast 15 min and it should reset any fault codes in the ecu that might work. its worth a go.

Cheers for the replies - I've tried disconnecting the battery for an hour or so, no luck unfortunately. Think it'll probably come down to getting the ECU reset, but it's a bit frustrating when I know it fixed itself last night.. must be some knack to it. Just keeping fingers crossed that it might sort itself out again tonight, I've got a long-ish drive to make tomorrow and would prefer it not to be causing problems. Have got it booked in for a diagnostic check on Monday morning as the engine management light has been on for a while as well, hopefully they might pick something up.

Thanks again for all the advice, always good to find a helpful and active forum!
