Fueling STILL not right

  1. #1
Well, we changed the fuel filter, oil filter, oil, fuel breather valve and it's still not right.

£10 got me 36 miles, surely that's not right for a GTI?

I've got an OBDII usb adapter which im going to plug into my laptop tomorrow and hopefully i should be able to check diagnostics.

Firstly, can anyone recommend a decent windows scanning software?

Secondly, any idea what else it could be that's making me overfuel or lose fuel?

There is no puddles under my car so no fuel leak, so what could it be?

    Thanks,

    Andy

Coolant temp sensor broke making the Ecu think the cars constantly cold?

The temperature still goes up on the dash and settles where it should.

I bought an OBD2 cable when i had my VW, will i be able to get it working to read my fault codes on my pug?

dash uses a diff temp sensor the the Ecu, if the ecu temp sensor goes tits up, then dash can still display normal as its a completely different sensor.

does not the engine run rough when that happens?

IIRC, OBD2 only works with 3 plug ECUs. Need older equipment for the single plugs I believe?

Coolant temp sensor or lambda sensor would be my port of call.

Well i've been speaking to Raunchz and i got out my multimeter and put it on 20k ohms and tested the green and blue temp sensors (one for dash im told) and the green read 518 or something and the blue just stayed on 1 (it stays on 1 when you're holding the prongs in the air)

With regards to running rough, i get the smell of fuel sometimes and it idles funny at traffic lights sometimes so i have to blip the throttle to get it right again.

Yeah sounds like a temp sensor. Your ecu is just pumping fuel in that isn't needed thinking it's cold. Fuel you aren't using at traffic lights etc.

A vacuum/air leak tends not to leave marks on the floor under the car

i get about that much from £10 petrol on my vts driving in london. id be very interested if you found a problem with yours and you can increase the mpg.

but mine does have a CDA airfilter, 4-2-1 manifold and scorpion exhaust

Wow, that felt rough as houses. Changed it, and it was stuttering all over the show, had some wicked backfires though and then once it had warmed up, it was fine.

The coolant temp now sits at just below the bottom red block and before the first red line. When i boot it, it goes up to the first red line and then back down again after a short while.

I couldn't smell any unburnt fuel which is good and it seemed quite smooth after the initial juddering.

Does that all sound normal now?

The fuel light came on earlier this afternoon and once i changed the sensor, it was off, and i ragged it rotten for about 8 miles and it only came back on when i got home. So seems fueling is better?

Right, i was 10 miles or so into my reserve, and i put £10 in at £1.19 a litre which i worked out is about 8.5 litres, so just under 2 gallons and managed to get 61 miles before my light turned on, so as it filled up the 10 miles of reserve, i'm guessing that's about 35mpg? 10 miles of town and the rest as motorway.

Does that sound about right guys?
