Torsion bar update need help with one last thing

  1. #1
Ok after attempt 3 lastnight i have given up all hope of my slide hammer getting the torsion bar to come out is there any outher tool that can be used ?
  2. #2
    the socket and bolt method.

Screw bolt into the torsion bar fully through a socket that rests on the beam, Then wind nut onto the bolt pushing against the socket to put tension on the bar outwards. Then give it a tap to 'free' it a little and re-tension the bolt. Repeat till it comes out, Or smack it out from the other side with a suitable drift...

There is a guide on the rallye reg by sandy which details everything iirc...

Fuck that, get a metal bar and hammer the shit outta it till it comes free, this is the best method.

Make sure you hit each bar from the correct side as your trailing arms will fall off

    +1, best method anyday,

you can only hit the torsion bars one way anyway as they will hit the trailing arm if not and the brake lines,

best thing to do, hit it with a big hammer and bar as said, but get someone the otherside hitting the trailing arm back the other way, therefore it wont fall off,

Also an axles stand for the bar to rest on will help too

sod the slide hammer,no chance, the bolt and socket trick i tried on my old saxo and the bolt snapped!! i lowered my car this morning on the rear, take the torx bolt and washers out and put hex bolts in and hit them so you dont bust the threads in the torsion bar, nice bit of bar and a slege hammer, top bar is normaly seized the worse so it will take a few hits.hope that helps.

Wouldt attempt the nut an bolt trick u will snapp more bolts than u cud imagine an the last thing u wont is a snapped bolt inside the torsion bar that u cant get bk out, i found the sledge hammer trick the best but make sure i dnt chew up any splines whist ur hammering away, also plenty ov wd40. hope that helps

Thanx for all the replies people i tried the socket method to no avail so will try smashing the shit out of it with a hammer.

Also do you have to remove the arb as if i leave it in i wont have to worry about the trail arms falling off as it will hold them in place ?

And also if im doing the passenger side i have to hit it from the drivers side and drivers side from the passanger side is that correct.

Trailing arm wont fall off if you hit the bars from the correct sides.

make sure you put a bot in the torsion bar when you hit it to save the trhread

Have you had any joy with this mate? my top torsion bar is stuck, two days of hammering and it aint moved a inch ?
  18. #18
mine was the same, top one wouldnt move at all and the bottom came out with a little persuasion so i just caked it in wd40 and tried it a week later and it slid out a treat

Took me over the course of a few days, but it will go in the end.I used a 20mm solid bar and lump hammer, shame your not closer maye, you could have borrowed it,but i know how you feel, keep at it though. After refitting mine,i replaced the torx bolts with 13mm bolts caked in copper grease, and cleaned the end of torsion bars up with the linisher, and run the tap down the thread, also caked them in copper grease aswell.
