Fuel gauge knackered

So basically my car tells me when its out of fuel, and that's it, by the fuel light coming on.

It's a 106 GTI with petrol gauge at the top, any ideas why it's broken? I changed the dials for metal ones ages ago:

Obviously the pins had to be moved etc... but i cant see why its not playing ball.

    Any ideas?

As in under the back seat under the right hand cover? Had that all up the other day as had to drop the fuel tank, it's all def connected pipe and connector wise.

    yeh, under the central cover.

If you lift the fuel pump out of the tank (unclip loom plug, both fuel lines, then uscrew the black ring) - you'll see the fuel pump float that tells the dials how much fuel you've got.

You'll see the fuel pump has a curved strip of metal on it that the float makes contact with to tell it the fuel level. Make sure the float can't move so that the contact is broken, can ever so slightly bend the float arm so that it makes constant contact, yet still moves freely.

    Worth a try mate
