changing cam

Has anyone changed a cam in a MK1 1.1/1.4 with the engine in situ?

I was thinking of undoing the O/S engine mount, removing the ECU and tilting the engine up a bit so that theres room for the cam to be pulled out- can it be done like that?

I'm pretty sure you need to remove the engine mount by the ECU to remove the cam covers anyway.

To swap a cam in an 8V lump, you need to remove the head - no way round it.

surely it will slide out once all the tappets have been loosened?

there physically isnt enough room to remove the cam without removing the head.

To remove the rockers you need to remove the head bolts, no? That's a new head gasket and bolts anyway.

How's that going to make any difference? Head needs to come off to remove the cam - it's the only way.

so why did you mention the rockers? they are irrelevant

Why ask for advice when all you're trying to do is pick holes in it?

Considering the rockers are giving your valve movement, I'd say they are pretty relevant. I mentioned the rockers as they are (so to speak) in contact with the cam (via a roller follower for roller rocker engines, or in contact with the rocker arm itself in non-roller rocker setups). The tappets are operated by the rockers, so backing them right off doesn't alter the camshaft's contact with anything in the head.

The bottom line is, 8V engines aren't overhead cam. You need to remove the head. Simples.

Its the way you answer that invites a similar response.

I am fully aware of how rockers work. But I suggested slackening off the tappets, or taking them out altogether, so that there would be no contact with the rocker and the cam. I once did something with a motorcycle. But I was asking here about the Saxo

The tappets are part of the rocker assembly mate and (to my knowledge) can't be removed. What cam were you looking to replace it with?

of course they can be removed, they just screw out. Have you ever seen a Saxo head?

Without removing the rockers? I didn't know that... I assumed they couldn't be removed as they're designed to last the life of the engine.

There you go again. You clearly don't need any advice we can offer so good luck swapping your camshaft.
