What's wrong with my engine?

  1. #1
    Hi all,

kind of an on going problem really. On startup my car gives of a small puff of smoke (blue I think which leads me to belive it's burning oil). Driving it's fine but does smell a bit if I give it the beans from time to time. Also when I take my foot off the accelerator the revs stick upfor about half a second to a second.
However it doesn't stick as much when the engine is cold.

I'm starting to think the piston rings are slightly worn. Any other ideas???
I top it up once a month but it doesn't loose much oil at all to be fair.

I'm using cheap oil atm as it's all I had but I'm about to give it a service with some proper stuff. Would this help?

I've changed both temp sensors in the block and the throttle cable is fine. It's a mk1 vtr if it helps.

    Thanks

    Sam

I dont know whats wrong matey, but my gf sisters boyfriend has a saxo and he sticks halfords oil in his car 10-40w fully sym, and he not had any problem so its not to do with te oil,

10w-40 fully synth aint a bad oil to use in a saxo at all. Just because its halfrauds dont mean its bad.
The oil i used was whatever i had lieing around the yard at the time (probely a cheap all purpose engine oil) As i checked it there and it was very low so i topped it up to get me home. But it is in need of a full oil change anyway.

Forgot to mention - car is on 73k. Has induction kit and a cat back supersprint pipe on it. However my cat is about as usefull as a choco teapot at keeping emmisions down.

Sounds exactly the same as mine buddy. (piston rings worn)

possibly time for a new engine? not sure if these can be renewed or not or if it's worth it.

Nah, if its piston rings then its new engine time, especially with vtr lumps going very cheap nowadays. Going to keep running it as its been like it quite a while. If it gets worse ill have to source a new lump

If its on startup it could be valve stems.

    Sounds like piston rings pal.

I work in a garage and we had one in the other week.

Sorry, I meant valve stem and I cannot edit.

Any idea the cost involved in replacing the valve stems? Id rather give that a go than replace the whole engine.

Not expensive at all - the part is very cheap, we charge about £100 for the job doing including the parts.

hmmmm might have to check these too. saves the hassle of the transplant.

when my mates revs were staying up it was because of his accelorator cable. have u checked that ?
  13. #13
Yeah, as said it first post. The cable is fine and smooth. Also replaced the temp sensors incase it was revving high thinking it was colder than it is.

Dont quiet understand your english here. A noisey rocker cover can be down to the tappets needing adjusting. I can adjust them fine but its not them.

Sorry for the thread from the dead revival but mine does this but on a much bigger scale! im getting through about half a pint of oil every week so i only put cheapo shit in now.

I do get through alot of miles though, added just under 3k in about a month so im not surprised but i still always warm the car up properly before giving it a few beans.

Tbh mate i wouldnt bother with it untill it presents a real problem just always have a bit of oil handy in the boot. (i always have a bottle of oil, water, antifreeze and basic toolkit in the boot of mine)
