As the title says.... With or without? What sounds better?
With or without silencer?

#2Depends really. A silencer generally softens the sound and makes it a quieter noise... but if you want a loud noise from the exhaust then no silencer.

#4i just put a magnex backbox on my car straight from standard and it makes sod all difference. I was gonna take the silencer off... What would be the best thing to do. take the silencer off or just get a better manifold? which would make the best sound? sorry from threa hijack btw.
-
#5I'd get a manifold tbh.Quote:i just put a magnex backbox on my car straight from standard and it makes sod all difference. I was gonna take the silencer off... I've got the full magnex system with two silencers on my VTR, and with the cat in the manifold it's really quiet.
The cat really kills the sound.
Using either a supersprint center section or a new manifold would give you a bit more noise
-
#6i can get the magnex sentre section... my mech amte siad he can just cut the silencer out and weld some pipe on and it will be alright lol. He used to work for Pug so i do trust him lol. Would this work?
-
#7It would make it louderQuote:i can get the magnex sentre section... my mech amte siad he can just cut the silencer out and weld some pipe on and it will be alright lol. He used to work for Pug so i do trust him lol. Would this work?

If you're wanting performance as well, you can get the supersprint center section without a silencer. Then with a new manifold it would sound pretty good
Some saxos come without the center silencer. Not sure which ones, but i know my mk1 1.1 had a straight through center section.
It might be cheaper to just get one of those from a scrappy.
You could get a mk1 vtr manifold as well to decat it.
That would be the cheapest way to get it loud i guess
-
#8I want it to be raspy more than anyting, i travel to wales alot and cba with booming the whole trip lol. Im thinkin just take the silencer out becuase then it wont be to loud and raspy? I cba to take the cat out becuase i will just have to put it back for MOT lol. Would the magnex center pipe make any difference to if i had like a weld on pipe where the silencer used to be?Quote:It would make it louder

lol.
Currently got the silencer off and too much noise!!! Not subtle at all!! Silencer FTW !! -
#10For the money it would cost to get the magnex center pipe.. i don't think it would be worth it. You'd need the "decat" pipe too, otherwise you'll have a gap where the mk1/VTS has it's cat.Quote:I want it to be raspy more than anyting, i travel to wales alot and cba with booming the whole trip lol. My mate has a 106 with a full pugsport system on. It's really raspy, and pretty loud. On the motorway it's awful though. Sitting in the back you cant have a conversation with the person next to you
Have a search of youtube for what different systems sound like.
If you listen to a magnex system on a vts, it might give you an idea of what yours will sound like with no center silencer. -
#11Out of curiosity, can you have a supersprint de-cat cenre section with original silencer pipe?! Myne has the later mK1 engine,..
-
#12Not sure what you mean by this.Quote:Out of curiosity, can you have a supersprint de-cat cenre section with original silencer pipe?! Myne has the later mK1 engine,..
I think the supersprint parts are more or less direct replacement.
They have larger internal diameter, but you can use the supersprint center pipe with standard backbox, and standard manifold.
Likewise, you could use the supersprint backbox with the standard center pipe.
The magnex is a bit different, you have to cut bits to make that fit the standard center pipe
-
#13On the MK1 setup, cat and silencer are in the centre of the exhaust and not in Mani, they are two seperate pipes, sonic possible could I keep the de-cat pipe then have the original silencer pipe then have the backbox?Quote:Not sure what you mean by this.

Sorry for the confusion! This might make it easier to understand! Starting to confuse myself now

#14I'd imagine so.Quote:On the MK1 setup, cat and silencer are in the centre of the exhaust and not in Mani, they are two seperate pipes, sonic possible could I keep the de-cat pipe then have the original silencer pipe then have the backbox?

I think most of the exhaust parts available are pretty inter-changeable with the standard parts.
There are a few exceptions.. like the magnex backbox is a different connection... -
#15So im taking it, if you take the silencer out then goodbye un-noisey journey... but you can get decent noise from a aftermarket manifold? All i want is for it to be a little raspy when its idle-ing :'( bad times
-
#16Bascally easiest way to explain is, without silencer unbearably noisy!! With silencer subtle!! Choice is yoursQuote:So im taking it, if you take the silencer out then goodbye un-noisey journey... but you can get decent noise from a aftermarket manifold? #17Yeh, raspy is noisy

And noisy is horrible on motorways.
You could just fit bigger speakers? -
#18the plus side to this is that i wouldnt want to speed! haha... Fuck my life, why cant things be simple, literally with a panel filter and a magnex back box its still as quiet as it was standard!!! WTF strange this car business.Quote:Bascally easiest way to explain is, without silencer unbearably noisy!! With silencer subtle!! Choice is yours

#19^^^haha
Hole in exhaust FTW
-
#20Just man up and go for the loud exhaustQuote:the plus side to this is that i wouldnt want to speed! haha... Fuck my life, why cant things be simple, literally with a panel filter and a magnex back box its still as quiet as it was standard!!! WTF strange this car business.

Road noise isn't exactly minimal in a saxo as it is
My mate with the 106 was fine in the front, it's in the back that the noise is a problem
Just think of the heads you'll turn in the maccies car park
-
#21Yeh blud i iz lookin well fowardz to dat bruv.Quote:Just man up and go for the loud exhaust

Alright i'll de-silence it, also it has a nice magnex backbox so it should be a nice tone
i fucking hope.

Yeh, just go for it
It probably wont be too loud, considering you've still got the cat in place. -
#23Head will defo be turning!! But too much noise for me is chavy! Personal preference though! Which is why I'm going back to the silencer!! That noise level in myne is unbearable to say the least, and on motorways........Quote:Just man up and go for the loud exhaust
