have you been driving it hard? normal?

The fan kicks in fine in traffic etc.... Driving it normally and hard occasionally.... Does this help at all..... Could it possibly be the thermostat?

mine did this ages ago, it played up for ages. i would drive along normally, the temp would rise up off the scale rapidly, stay there and then a few mins later come down again.
anyway, it continued to do that for ages, (fan wasn't on when this happened)
and occasionally the red light would come on but the temp would stay where it was. i never did anything about it because i knew the temperature was fine as straight away i connected my laptop to the ecu and the highest it read was 92.

anyway, i changed my battery and bizarrely it hasn't played up since.

i wouldn't worry about it too much to be honest, make sure the cooling system is bled properly to ensure there is no airlocks. check the connections on the temp sensor, consider changing the temp sensor. also earth points. failing all that, i can't see what i could be.

Oh right tht sounds interesting mate thankyou mine been doing exactly te same.... To bleed the cooling system shell turn car on loosen bleed nipple and jus top up engine coolant until water comes out of bleed nipple?

yeah pretty much. there's 2 bleed nipples iirc, could be wrong though, its ages since i've done it!

also, put the heaters on full on warm and obviously wait for the fan to cut in.
if you ever hear what sounds like running water under the bonnet when pulling away slowly then that quite often means there is an airlock.
