battery or alternator?

   2001 1100, whilst out steering started to get heavy, stopped car, tried starting again but sounded as if battery was flat, started second time, radio cut out, gauges zeroed, got home wouldn't restart, charged battery and car started but no power steering, ticked over fine but when turned off it wouldn't start again. could this be a battery or alternator problem.

   it will start to knock out things you dont need to drive a car!
   the first thing the alternator will stop powering if its on its way out, is the Power steering pump!
