Having a nightmare with steering

  1. #1
Really needing some help or advice, the problem is having is getting on my tits so much, I'm thinking about just selling the car!!

    *rant over*

Basically, just recently, there has been a horrible wirring kind of sound when I switch the engine on, when I turn the steering wheel, it goes away, but then comes back again. The worst thing though is if the car has been stationary, i'll switch the engine one, but the steering becomes stupidly stiff and the wheels hardly turn, again this just comes and goes.

I'm thinking it might have something to do with the electric power steering pump, basically, it must be f**cked.

Based on how I have described the problem, do you think i'm right?
If so, is there a guide on here or anywhere else telling me how to change it, also are the pumps expensive to buy?

    Cheers
    Michael

the whirring is the pump, my old one whirred all the time until it packed in about 25k later.

    might be low on fluid?

They are a common thing to go on the Saxos mate yeah, and its definitely a PAS issue. Undo the PAS fluid cap in the engine bay and check the level, if its under the limit you may have a leak somewhere. What year is your VTR, and has it been lowered?

Don't use a big hammer, I did this to mine and realised the next day I smashed a hole in it. Change the PAS pump.

The level of fluid seems to be fine, don't think there is a leak. It's a 2001 and it hasn't been lowered. I'm going get someone to have a look at it over the weekend, try and get a diagnosis, I hope this isn't going to cost of fortune to sort like.

Cheers for the heads up regarding the hammer, think i'll just leave it to the people who know what they are doing. Think i'll start having a look for a replacement PAS pump.

Its worth it in the long run, PAS Pump from a scrappy £35, fit it yourself, its piss easy.
