MOT fail drastically, what shall I do?

  1. #1
ok so my 1.1 Y reg saxo was all fine till i took it for an MOT today, turns out the following things are wrong.

both windscreen wipers do not clear the windscreen effectively.
    both headlamps aim too low.
    spare wheel carrier insecure.
both front constant velocity gaiter insecurely mounted to its housing.
rear join exhaust has a major leak of exhaust gases.
front cat exhaust has a major leak of exhaust gases.
    brakes arent good enough.

will cost £491 to repair all of this.
is there any point fixing this stuff or should i just scrap / sell the car?
  2. #2
If its worth fixing to you fix it.
  3. #3
is that what they quoted you mate you might be able to do 1 or 2 jobs your self to save a few quid
  4. #4
you need new wipers £10 diy job
discs and pads £60 diy job
cv boot x2 £20 tops fairly easy but could get done at garage if unsure

lights exhaust and cage unsure without seeing but shouldnt cost you too much
  5. #5
    fix it yourself,
    pair of window wiper,15 quid
middle and back box exhaust lets say 70 quid
    pads and discs 50 quid
    cv gaiters 15 quid
    labour £0
    total £150

thats a good saving and its what i think the prices maybe so dont hold me to that,i always do my own stuff saves waiting and you learn new things, just read haynes if your not sure.

    Sounds overpriced.

Heres what i would pay worse case senario but you could do the jobs cheaper:

    -2x new wipers £7 - ebay
-Headlamps need adjusting from inside the car or 2x new headlamps £30 - sax-p/ebay
-Take spare wheel and crade off the car its not needed for MOT
-Exhaust needs welding £30 - garage labour
    -New disks and pads £40 - eurocarparts/ebay/sax-p
-Brakes bleeding £30 - garage labour
-New Driveshafts £74 - eurocarparts (Not shure if this fixes the CV problem)
-Driveshaft fitting £60 - garage labour
  7. #7
all of that can be fixed yourself for muuuuuuuch less than that! you could fit new discs, pads, lights, exhaust, wipers, bleed the brakes, 2 new driveshafts, etc for less than that and i wouldnt mind betting that you dont need brand new of most of that!

just fit new wiper blades, adjust the headlights, remove the spare wheel carrier for the MOT only, check if its just the CV gaitors that are loose, if so use cable ties to secure them, otherwise if they are split then buy the stretchy ones and fit new ones, or go all out and get a decent pair from the scrappy for £60, fit new brake pads and discs on the front, and new shoes on the back, bleed the brakes up, then finally you could probably fit a whole new exhaust system from the downpipe back (cheap parts available online)

    easy

garage quoted me 800 for the work for my mot,, i spent less than half of tht and fixed it all myself! half the jobs they said didnt need doing i feel like they were trying to rip me off and 2weeks after when i took it in for retest they looked abit pissed off that it passed! theres nothing major there id fix it mate do it yourself its always a good learning point and everyones got to start somewhere

  11. #11
oh and i got quoted 300 plus by the mot garage. the 180 included the cost of mot aswell so cost me 145
  12. #12

    Well over priced

Heres what our garage would charge:

    MOT - £40
Headlight aim adjustment - £10 (this is done on the ehadlight units NOT inside the car)
Exhaust centre section OR back box(only 1 or other by sounds of it not both) - £20
Cat/Downpipe needswelding or gum gum - £20 at most
    CV Boots x 2 - £15
    Pads & discs - £40
Spare wheel carrier £5 to secure

    Labour - £100 ish

You need to take it to another garage for the repairs and return to the mot station for the free retest.

there is nothing major in that list
  17. #17
all sorted in under 100 tbh!
  18. #18
Mate, as many people have said alot of the things on the list are easy DIY jobs, my MOT fail certificate came back with 3 pages. Bulb enlinements, gaiters split, front bumper insecure, emissions too high etc, see what you can do yourself, and if you havent already invest in a Haynes manual. That'll make life easy, go premium and jump onto the Sax-p Buying and selling sections you can have a browse and put up what you need!! As mentioned my mot fail was epic, there was everything wrong with it, but i did what i could and handed it over to the garage. They did welding, fitted a cat (as there was only a silencer on) etc. In the beginning they quoted me £600-£750. Cost me £360 all in all, exclusive of the initial £50 for the MOT. Its worth it.

    Saxo's FTW!!

yea i think they all go there at some time, ive already had passenger side done near jackin point the other needs doin now. and the back arches right at the bottom near inside of wheels, cant really see it unless take wheels off. ive scraped all the loose paint and whatever citreon cover underside of car with off, water gets trapped inside it and starts to rot.then undersdealed all exposed bits.5 quid from halford cheaper than the weldin bill next year.i had a t reg vtr it was a rot box sold it for 750.think all saxos rot
  21. #21
vtsal i was just wondering what year is your vtr. might be worth gettin some underseal aswell.

    Steve.

take it to a different garage mate sound like theyre ripping you off
  24. #24
i would say this would cost 100quid max, pair of wiper blades, exhaust paste and some cable ties
  25. #25
Mines a P reg 1.4 on 120k and it always passes or nearly passes. Only probs usually are back brakes. In fact its a remarkable vehicle. Still runs like new, on original clutch and driveshafts, gears tight etc. For sale as it happens £600 with new MOT
