   Hi guy when the shock absorber has come off..does the spring have to be compressed before cracking the top bolt off?

   can it not be cracked off whilst the strut is stll on the car?

   havent tried doing it that way myself so wouldnt like to say. i cant really see any harm but would find out first. either way you would still have to compress the spring thats going on unless they are significantly shorter.

   you can crack it off but don't take it all the way off for gods sake! take the strut off and compress the spring, trust me,the resulting injuries from a coil spring smacking you in the face ain't pretty, theres at least 2 mechanics in ilkeston still bearing scars from it and one of the has false teeth from it, not clever to try and take short cuts at all

   lmfao...oh and i took off the absorber got round to unbolting the top bolt wilst holding back with torx..but cudnt crack it off..maybe cos i didnt compress the spring??from what you say thank god i didnt crack it off..wuda smacked me striaght in bollox lol..wuda needed some copper bollox hahaha..

   lol i like that...copper bollox!! best thing to do is take the strut off, bring it down to me, make a coffee and i'll compress it and whip the nut off with air-gun,lot less hassle then trying to hold it with a torx too. But please don't try and stop a spring with your balls, if you do you can always send the pics of them to Nuts magazine, they pay for gory images lol

    dont you need to hold the torx screw thing if yourusing an air gun? would it just whip it off? and are yu based near tesco?

    airgun will whip the nut straight off. no need to worry about the torx/allen key bit in the centre
