Important! : Caliper carrier thread worn....

  1. #1
I have replaced some suspension bits on the front of my Vtr. Steering tie rods, droplinks and given it a paint up etc and also fitted some new front discs. When i went to bolt the caliper carrier to the strut i found the top bolt was fine but the lower bolt most of the thread where it mounted to the strut had gone.
Ex mechanic obviously cross threaded the bolt and its taken the threads with it. (hence why i now do work on it myself)
My question is can i tap a new thread into the strut leg caliper mounting point and then fit new caliper bolts? Any idea what size tap i would need?

    Cheers Andy

iirc they arent a standard pitch, more like M12x1.25 which is the same as wheel bolts

if its that badly stripped though you might have to go to a bigger size, but then the bolts arent going to fit through the carrier

There are a couple of threads left in the bolt hole. I was considering using cemical metal and tapping into that, it's meant to set as hard as steel and can be tapped into, just wondering if it would be strong enough. If not its getting another strut but then i've just put a brand new spring on this bloody strut.

get another strut, you only get one chance and a brake caliper coming adrift and jamming your wheel at speed is no fun

it's not something i would personally try, unless it was a short term thing until you could get to a scrappy for another strut. But i'm guessing you wont have a tap of that size lying around, so you're gonna have to go out at some point lol

if it was another part then maybe, but not the brakes!
