    Hi, all

Think my Saxo after spending a bucket load of money on is now shagged I was driving to birmingham and started hearing a ticking noise thought nothing of it at first then as i was going up the hill through hagley it started getting louder and started losing power Infact by the time i goto the top of the not very steep hill i was in 2nd and hardly moving with the engine rattling its brains out! Then i noticed something i should of noticed ALOT sooner! the water temp was off the clock, I turned the engine off straight away lifted the bonnet and there was smoke pouring out im lucky it didnt set on fire tbh. Anyway i called my brother to tow me home after waiting 30 mins i tryed to start the car again to see if i could get it off the junction at the island as i was blocking everyone. It started easy and the tapping sound had disapeared so i drove it over to a sideroad and parked it had alook underneath and the bottom radiator hose has a hole in it where the drive shaft had been obviously rubbing on it! ( oh im so glad the person before me lowerd the car... ) Anyway i have a few questions for any mechanicly minded people on here..

1: What is the likely cause of the tapping noise while it was overheating? and why isnt it tapping now its cooled down?

My thoughts are the tapping is either due to the shells in the crank or pistons rings or perhaps even the valves being that hot they were not closing fully?

2: Would it of caused any perminant damage?

Im guessing its more than likely at the least warped the head.

3: If the compression tests show the pressure is still fine and the radiator hose is replaced etc is it ok to keep driving the car?

The car has given me nothing but problems I brought it as a non runner thought it would be an easy fix looked in pretty good nick apart from it didnt run so threw money at it until it was sorted what a twat! lol..

    So far its had

A new engine 50k miles £400 + oil filter, plugs, Oil, Cambelt etc.
    New Radiator £100
New discs and pads all round £60
    Reconditioned rear beam £250
    New pas side Mirror £35
    Rear tyre £60
Inner drive shaft gaitors x2 £50
    Steering rack gaitors £15
New Catalytic converter £60 already had full new exhaust front to back.
    New indicator lenses £30
2nd hand alternator few days ago decided to die £25
    Uprated lower Gearbox Bush £25

Also did all the stereo system inside but thats not essential still cost me £300 ish tho.

The car has a full MOT, 5 months tax how much do u think i would get if the engine is still okish?

Its a 97 model has a few lil dents and the odd scratch and chips.

also has a private reg S** VTS

Tapping could be as simple as one of the (hydraulic (spelling!)) lifters dying, The hose accounts of the overheating but can not think of why you did not check gauges/pull over when the power dropped off though mate! Any way, whats done is done, I would be looking to get compression test done to make sure piston rings are okay and keep an eye on oil pressure (do vts have oil pressure guage ?). If you get the noise again it may be time for a bottom end overhaul / sell the car. Maybe the ecu knocked you into limp mode as temp rose hence power loss - I am guessig here really, I do hope its okay for you mate. Note if you break down and need to move car whack it in 1st and turn the key with foot off the clutch, the starter motor will move the car enough to get it off the road if your stuck.

nice car mate. i have a vts and its funny you mention the hole in the bottom radiator pipe as mine did the same last week, where the driveshaft was rubbing against the pipe. rang citroen and they wanted £45 for the pipe lol wasnt going to pay that much so fixed it mesel lol. saxo's are nice cars but i seem to be having nowt but bother aswell. maybe cut your losses and get rid of. mine will be going the journey soon i will be hoping to get around £1200 for mine
