split rubber on my ball joint no play in it though, or is it best replace the lower suspension?

Yes that is an MOT fail.

Yep, it's a fail. Just replace the ball joint if possible, unless it's the wisbone joint, in which case it's time for a new bone.

both can be replaced, no need to replace wishbone.

    awesome engine question

    yes its an mot fail
much like split rubbers on drop links ect

I think it depends entirely on the individual mot tester.
I know that we only advise split rubber boots so long as the ball joint is ok.
No harm in just getting an mot done, then only replace it if it fails
