split rubber on my ball joint no play in it though, or is it best replace the lower suspension?

#3Yep, it's a fail. Just replace the ball joint if possible, unless it's the wisbone joint, in which case it's time for a new bone.

#7I think it depends entirely on the individual mot tester.
I know that we only advise split rubber boots so long as the ball joint is ok.
No harm in just getting an mot done, then only replace it if it fails
