Going Turbo On VTR Low Budget ...

  1. #1
Right i know your all going to sayyy you cant do a low budget turbo conversion ... BUT ... i have a ROVER VITESSE 2l turbo at the bottom of my garden ... has been there for bout 5 years .... the engine runs though as for the turbo i dont know but i presume it would be ok as it doesnt look to rusty on the outside ...

If i baught a Manifold ... and made the piping to go from turbo to intercooler and intercooler to throttle body. It would be possible ?

Ofcorse it would be a Low PSI conversion to keep it on the standard internals with the Newman cam ... i know it would also need a major remap i guess wich i'm thinking would be the most expensive part.

It's just an idea .... just wondering if it's possible i will defanatly look into it ... to tide me over till i get a 16v engine then i could shove the turbo on that i guess lol ....

so if somone could point me in the right direction ...

here's a pic of the engine im thinking of robbing the bits off ...

Bolting any old turbo onto any old engine is possible. What it will run like is questionable

The main issues you will have are like you say, with manifold/downpipe needing to be custom made and the mapping side of things. Lots of different options for mapping.

Were you just planning to pinch the turbo and intercooler?

well planning to pinch anything i can to be honest simo .... you know make it cheap as possible ...

Im struggling to think what else would be useful though. lol

What sort of price range are you trying to do this for?

    500 quid lol ...

I already got the VTR Cammed with GTI6 Injectors Ported and polished .... Prepped throttle body. so yeah .... i don't know just cheap as it can be to be honest ....

reckon i can pick up a manifold for 200 quid second hand .... so ...

and another £400ish for a decent re-map. Will you need extra fuelling for this? That'll take a MF2 presumably. Or might get away with bigger injectors?

the problem youve got is that the current setup cant read boost, so if you just get a remap youre going to be running rich off boost or lean on boost. neither are good.
you need standalone setup with bigger injectors or a 5th injector setup

I already have Bigger Injectors ... wether they are big enough or not i dont know .... they are off a GTI6

and yes i know the most expensive part is going to be the Remapping though i mite know somone who can do it me for cheap ... so need to get more info on that one ...

so basicly i'm going to need :

    Turbo - Got...
    Intercooler - Got ...
Dump Valve - May have one lying around....
    Intercooler Piping ...
    Manifold + Downpipe
    Re Map...

Anything else i mite need ?

I think what Lee was saying is that a re-map is not enough as the ecu doesn't understand boost. So presumably an alternative ecu is needed.

ahh i see ... right is there not a way to compensate this ? because i wont be thinking of going standalone untill i get my 16v engine ...

iirc chipwizards have mapped a boosted car with standard ecu.

would have thaught its possible to be honest .... il make a few phone calls

you can get a 5th injector with mf2, should cost about £200.
thing is even with someone to map it you need wideband lambda and an ecu that can recognise it, i dont think the standard ecu can. sow hat you do is you add the extra injector, and set the controller to inject fuel at certian points (when its on boost) and this compensates.
i may be wrong, i dont claim to know everything (yet...)
