Is this Air filter setup ok?

  1. #1

Where i have circled and that red line there should be a oil breather pipe connecting to it but it wasn't long enough but i was told to put a oil breather filter on the end of it which seems to work fine. On the air filter now theres nothing connecting to that circled area on the image, is that safe because its just a hole now.

Any help be appreciated guys! thanks Matt!

Its ok. You'll get alot of heatsoak on that filter and the underside of your bonnet will get slightly mucky as the breather vents the oil vapours onto it.

Well, ideally, the engine prefers cooler air, the engine bay will be hot from the manifold and engine block thus creating warm air, of which the filter will be taking in.

not bad, just that your engine wont perform as good. Cold air is more dense and so greater combustion compared to warmer air.

    +1 cover the hole.
I have the same filter and I have the pipe going into there as I dont like breather filters as they get mucky quick

    Just buy a longer pipe?

That hole needs to be at least covered up, but breathers can stink anyway so I'd just get a longer piece of pipe, should only cost a few quid.

Strange but mine doesnt seem to get mucky...

yeah, you'll wanna tape that hole up or something, that hole defeats the object of an air filter and could just suck straight in without filtration

Exactly - anything could end up getting sucked into the engine.

Thats the trouble with forums, people give advice when its clearly wrong!

I had one on my old 205 once and it used to let oil mist into the engine bay and made everything oily!

Well my car doesnt get much use so I suppose thats why. I cover about 1k miles a year and clean my engine bay once a month.

Remove that silly oil breather filter and plumb it back in to the system again.
  17. #17
k thanks guys will tape that hole up with something until i get a new pipe!
  18. #18
what should i cover the hole with? any ideas until i get some pipe
  19. #19
anything that wont get sucked in through the hole, chunky rubber bits or something, maybe tape?

Well no anything could not get sucked in. Yes odd bit of dirt might, but highly doubtful it will do much damage, if only left for a short period.

Tape over the top, then tape round that a few times so that it is secure.

A bit of pipe shouldnt be more the a few quid to connect that.

Like what? theres nothing in the bay thats loose to get sucked into such a small hole...

some people run throttle bodies with no filters at trackdays, not going to instantly destroy your engine...

    No problem.

Tbh I think it will be the same length as your old one.
All you need is some rubber hosing. Halfords sell it and used to be £4 per meter when I worked there.

I had the same problems/query as you when i first got my pipercross kit, i left it open for a couple days until..

    voila

Lexxi can I point out that the pipe is too close and not directed at the actual filter?

Move it round so its pointing at the filter rather than the metal top.
or pop that section of the fee off.

That rubber extension for the filter looks a good idea! I have that filter and atmo its sucking hot air from behind the engine
