#5Yes mate i had this problem last week, something burned out in the alternator and i had a few lights come up on my dash (air bag, abs ... ) car cut out and wouldn't start after that, turned out the alternator was fucked!! Luckily i had it reconditioned a few months ago and its got 12mnts warranty so took it back and got it sorted. Thank fuck! Sounds like the same problem to me mate.

#8You ight be jumping the gun a bit getting a new alternator. It will be hot because it is bolted to the engine. Quite often the smell is a breather pipe popped off and you are getting the blow by gasses into the car. If your battery light is on then by all means a new alternator is the way to go but it sounds like its working okay from what you've wrote.
